Marisa Tomei reportedly in final negotiations to join Spider-Man reboot as Aunt May

Tom Holland, the star of the upcoming Spider-Man reboot, may just have his first co-star. According to Variety, Marisa Tomei is in final negotiations to play Peter Parker’s aunt, May Parker, in the latest addition to the superhero franchise. Sony and Marvel reportedly made an offer to the Academy Award-winning actress last week.

If a deal is reached, Tomei would take the baton from Sally Fields, another Oscar winner, who played Aunt May in the Marc Webb-directed Amazing Spider-Man movies. Rosemary Harris, the Aunt May of Sam Raimi’s earlier Spider-Man films, has received a Tony award, among other accolades, making Tomei the latest addition to an extremely talented group of ladies. She’d likely make her Marvel debut in the still untitled Spider-Man due out in 2017, while Holland will be part of 2016’s Captain America: Civil War.

Action flicks aren’t Tomei’s standard fare. She’s typically signed on for dramas, like In the Bedroom and The Wrestler, and comedies, including What Women Want and Anger Management. Her most recent film, Trainwreck, is more in line with what she’s done in the past; the Judd Apatow-directed comedy, due out on July 17, stars Amy Schumer, Danielle Radcliffe, and even Method Man and LaBron James. Currently, she’s filming The Big Short, a drama that will have her sharing the screen with Christian Bale and Ryan Gosling.

Tomei would join Holland, who was cast only after an extensive search and many screen tests. With Spider-Man officially joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, producers seem to be taking their casting decisions very seriously. With all of the cross-over action, it’s important for them to choose actors that they can see fitting into the larger picture. Tomei certainly seems like a good bet, so we hope to see her officially join the MCU soon.

The next Spider-Man installment is scheduled to hit theaters on July 28, 2017.

Which Marvel villains should be in Tom Holland’s Spider-Man 4?
Tom Holland as Spider-Man in "Spider-Man: Homecoming."

The MCU has plenty of upcoming projects that fans are excited about, but a potential fourth entry in Tom Holland's Spider-Man series is near the list's top. 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home ended with Holland's Peter entering a new phase in his life. Forgotten by the world and with no one left by his side, Peter is now closer to the perpetually down-on-his-luck version from the comics that fans have come to know and love. The ending is the perfect setup for a new Spidey adventure, with Spider-Man acting as the street-level hero he was always supposed to be. But who should he fight in his new adventure, especially now that he has no Avengers or Avengers-adjacent allies by his side?

Well, the possibilities are limitless. After all, Spider-Man has some of the best and most iconic villains in Marvel comics, and while many have already appeared in the Web Slinger's numerous live-action projects, some remain untouched by the film industry. From fearsome crime bosses to chameleonic supervillains, these infamous foes would make worthy enemies for Holland's Spider-Man.
