Among the deluge of developments at Comic-Con was a collection of images from the upcoming HBO show Westworld, a sci-fi series centered around a Wild West theme park in which automatons carry out whatever wild/twisted fantasies visitors can conjure up.
The story is adapted from the 1973 Michael Crichton film of the same name and is set to release some time in 2016.
Now, if Game of Thrones has taught us anything, it’s that HBO makes non-ambitious, low-budget shows that nobody wants to watch. But if you’re curious (and capable of grasping sarcasm), take a look at the gallery above.
Featured in this slate of images is James Marsden, Evan Rachel Wood, Anthony Hopkins, Thandie Newton, Jeffrey Wright, and Ed Harris. The cast of the show will be broken up (generally) into two camps: those who inhabit the old-western world, and those who work behind the scenes managing it.
Hopkins will portray theme park owner Dr. Robert Ford, while Harris will take on The Man in Black, an unruly robotic gunslinger originally played by Yul Brynner.
Executive Producer Jonathan Nolan says of the show’s universe: “It’s a place where you can be whoever you want to be and there are no consequences — no rules, no limitations” adding that his team’s aim was to create “the most ambitious, subversive, f–ked-up television series.”
Westworld is currently in post-production. The series filmed last year and was picked up after a successful pilot episode.
Along with these images, a teaser trailer reportedly dropped at Comic-Con. While we don’t have the trailer for you yet, word is that it was a dark and stylish spectacle, showcasing a beautiful world that becomes more and more sinister as you delve deeper.
By the looks of things, HBO may have another hit on its hands, but it’s hard to imagine the network bottling the kind of lightning they caught with GOT. Stay tuned.
