Year Walk, a delightfully creepy and atmospheric point-and-click adventure which began its life on iOS, will soon be making its way to the Wii U, developer Simogo annouced today.

“First of all. No. This is not a simple port,” Simogo’s Simon Flesser states in the official announcement. We knew that we wouldn’t want to hand Year Walk off to a porting studio, yet we wanted a fresh view of the game to make it feel new, exciting and home on the platform.”

Scram Kitty and his Buddy on Rails studio Dakko Dakko was brought on board to make this a reality, implementing several GamePad-specific features to make the experience of playing Year Walk less frustrating than it was on mobile devices. While the iOS version of the game features a completely separate companion app that included information on the game’s lore and hints to complete its puzzles, this information will now always be shown on the GamePad screen, and motion controls have been added to use in “almost every puzzle.”

In addition, you can take notes using the stylus to help keep track of all the information the game throws at you in a short stretch of time

“If you have played Year Walk, you know how useful this will be,” Flesser says.” He’s not wrong: although the game can be completed in around an hour, its puzzles are beyond cryptic, and I’m not ashamed to admit that I had to look up walkthrough videos online to complete it. The dark, atmospheric journey through the woods of Sweden confused me, as I had no knowledge of Swedish folklore before playing it, but I had to reach the end.

There’s no firm release date set for Year Walk on Wii U, but Simogo is planning for a “late summer or early fall” launch. If you can’t wait that long, a PC version was also released last year.

The best Wii U games of all time

The Wii U era wasn’t the most commercially successful for Nintendo, with the system shipping only 13.5 million units over the course of its life. Despite the hardware being a commercial failure, the Wii U featured some of the best games ever released on a Nintendo platform.

In this guide to the best Wii U games, we’re going to highlight our favorites. Although there are still a handful of games that you can only play on the Wii U, many of the top games from the console have been ported to Switch (read our best Nintendo Switch games roundup for more on that). Even so, if you have a Wii U gathering dust, these games will breathe new life into it.

Super Mario 3D World made it to Switch, but other Wii U games are still stranded
Wii U Composite

Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury comes to Nintendo Switch this weekend giving the console another excellent first-party game. It’s the latest in a line of Wii U titles to receive a Switch port in the past few years, salvaging the best of the ill-fated two-screen system’s surprisingly strong library.

Even with games like Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker and Pikmin 3 making the jump to Switch, there’s a handful of strong Wii U games that haven’t -- and probably never will. That’s creating a generational dead zone that may leave games that dared to take advantage of the console’s bold concept forever trapped on the Wii U.
