If the prospect of a powerful, shouty Lamborghini SUV wasn’t thrilling enough, now the Italian automaker is considering a Superveloce version soon after the new model’s introduction.
We know the production version of the Urus concept that was revealed back in 2012 will be similarly styled and that it’s gunning for rivals like the BMW X6 M, Porsche Cayenne Turbo S, Mercedes-Benz GLE63 AMG, and the upcoming Bentley Bentayga. It’s also a fair bet that the Urus will use some form of the VW Group’s naturally-aspirated 5.2-liter V10 or a new turbocharged V8 with over 600 horsepower.
Lamborghini recently announced that the Urus SUV will go on sale in 2018 and CEO Stephan Winkelmann said a range-topping SV edition seems like a good move. To Lamborghini, Superveloce means a trimmed down, powered up, and more aggressively-styled iteration of the standard vehicle, so expect the Urus SV to sit a bit lower than the normal car and pack extra horses under its hood.
At this point, the decision on an SV Urus, as well as other potential variants of the SUV, depends on customer requests. Also under consideration is a smaller version of the Urus that could be introduced after 2020, assuming the Urus sells well.
While the performance landscape could change between now and 2018, the Urus even in standard form will be one of the most powerful production SUVs on the market, and possibly the most powerful. The present competition, starting from least to greatest output, includes the 567 HP BMW X6 M, 570 HP Porsche Cayenne Turbo S, 577 HP Mercedes-Benz GLE63 AMG, and the upcoming 600 HP Bentley Bentayga.
Not included in that crop is the less premium, but conceivably insane, Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT Trackhawk that will make a claimed 707 HP from the Challenger Hellcat’s 6.2-liter supercharged V8 when it goes on sale in two years.
The world of uber-fast SUVs may be unfathomably power-rich before the end of the decade.
