Keiji Inafune’s Mighty No. 9, a successor to the Mega Man series he created, hadn’t even wrapped up development before he moved on to his next Kickstarter project. Red Ash: The Indelible Legend was to be another spiritual successor, this time to Mega Man Legends.
While Mighty No. 9 was a Kickstarter hit, Red Ash was clearly a less coherent campaign from the start. Yesterday, when the campaign finally came to a close, it had only managed to raise $519,999 — well short of its $800,000 goal.
Fortunately, the game as a whole hasn’t been scrapped. As we reported last week, Inafune’s studio Comcept signed a deal with the China-based Fuze Entertainment to cover the development costs of the prologue. Somewhat ironically, this announcement caused a dramatic drop-off in the flow of Kickstarter pledges, and ultimately the campaign’s failure.
A roughly eight-hour game, the in-development prologue is dubbed Red Ash: The KalKanon Incident, and will be coming to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. No release window has been announced at this time.
That’s not all. The game’s anime spin-off, Red Ash -Magicicada-, had its own Kickstarter, and that one was successful, raising a total of $162,000. No specific release information has been announced, but backer rewards are expected to ship in July 2017.
Meanwhile, Comcept’s first game, Mighty No. 9, is still on the way. An Amazon mix-up led some to believe that the game would be delayed, but all signs point to it still being on track for its September 15 release date. If you own a PC, console, or handheld, the game is probably coming to it. Mighty No. 9 is coming to the PC, Mac, and Linux, in addition to the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Wii U, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation Vita.
These aren’t the only projects Inafune is keeping busy with, either. At this year’s E3 Microsoft announced ReCore, an Xbox One exclusive that Comcept and the ex-Metroid Prime developers of Armature Studio are working on.
