Infiniti’s Q70 Premium Select Edition gives owners more to talk about

The annual Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance is where the world’s wealthiest car collectors go to show off their most impressive possessions. The 2016 Infiniti Q70 Premium Select Edition may not be quite special enough for that company, but it should at least give its driver something to talk about.

Unveiled at Pebble Beach, where Infiniti has a significant presence this year as a sponsor, the Premium Select Edition is essentially a trim package for the Q70, and will become available beginning in November. While the casual observer may not be able to spot the differences, anyone willing to shell out the extra cash for the special edition will likely be happy to point them out.

The exterior features dark chrome trim, a darkened lower rear bumper, and a new rear deck lid spoiler. There are also 20-inch alloy wheels with a design unique to this model.

On the inside, the Premium Select Edition gets Graphite or Stone semi-aniline leather seating surfaces, a “suede-like” headliner, aluminum trim, illuminated kick plates, and floor mats with contrasting piping. It’ll be a shame to get those dirty.

The Premium Select Edition accoutrements can be added to any standard-wheelbase, nonhybrid Q70, meaning buyers can choose between a 3.7-liter V6 with 330 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque, or a 5.6-liter V8 with 420 hp and 417 lb-ft. A seven-speed automatic transmission is mandatory with either engine, and both are available with rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.

Infiniti gave its midsize luxury sedan a significant overhaul for 2015, adding a long-wheelbase model and restyling the exterior to affect more of a familial resemblance to the smaller Q50. The Q70 remains Infiniti’s de facto flagship until something more impressive comes along.

For now, though, Infiniti is largely moving in the other direction. It will debut the 2017 Q30 compact at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show next month, hoping to appeal to fuel-conscious European buyers and Americans looking to downsize. Only time will tell if any of these Infiniti models are ever deemed worthy of the lawn at Pebble Beach.

Mercedes-Benz G580 first drive: old-school off-roader goes electric
2025 Mercedes-Benz G580 from three quarter view.

American car buyers mostly know Mercedes-Benz as a luxury brand. But for decades, the automaker has also produced the tough, rugged G-Class (also known as the Geländewagen or G-Wagen), an SUV not afraid to get its leather upholstery muddy. And now, this iconic Mercedes is going electric.

The 2025 Mercedes-Benz G580 with EQ Technology — the final name of the SUV previously known as the EQG — isn’t the first electric off-roader. The Rivian R1S and R1T and GMC Hummer EV have proven that electric powertrains and off-roading are a great combination. But the electric G-Wagen is different because it’s based on an internal-combustion model — and a very traditional one at that.

Honda believes hydrogen semi trucks will make the case for fuel cells
Honda hydrogen fuel-cell semi truck.

Honda remains committed to hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles, but the market for those vehicles remains limited. So Honda is looking at other uses for fuel cells -- including commercial trucks.

To show how that could work, Honda converted a semi truck to fuel-cell power, replacing its diesel engine with three fuel-cell modules. Together, the three modules produce a combined 321 horsepower, and can propel the truck to a top speed of 70 mph. There's enough onboard hydrogen storage capacity for a 400-mile range with a full load, Honda claims.

Mercedes-Benz G580 vs Rivian R2: Is the much cheaper Rivian actually better?
2025 Mercedes-Benz G580 from three quarter view.

Mercedes-Benz has finally taken the wraps off of the new "Mercedes-Benz G580 with EQ Technology." Yeah, it's a mouthful, but it's basically a new electric G-Wagon. It looks a lot like the G-Wagon you know and love, but with an electric powertrain and a battery. It's not the only electric SUV out there, however, and there are some great ones -- like the Rivian R2.

Both the Mercedes G580 and the Rivian R2 have a lot going for them, but they also approach the electric SUV slightly differently. Is one better than the other? I put the two head-to-head to find out.
Design
The approach that the two vehicles take to design is quite different -- and you might like one better than the other.
