Christopher Nolan’s next movie will hit theaters in 2017

It may not have a title or an official plot synopsis, but Christopher Nolan’s next movie project does have a release date.

Warner Bros. Pictures has put the Interstellar director’s upcoming mystery film on the calendar for July 21, 2017, sandwiching the movie between the next installment of the Planet of the Apes franchise and the Spider-Man reboot co-produced by Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios.

So far, there’s little — if any — credible information out there about Nolan’s next feature, but the scheduling of the film between two high-profile projects like War of the Planet of the Apes and the still-untitled Spider-Man movie could lend itself to two very different, but plausible scenarios. On one hand, the studio might feel that the mystery movie will stand on its own due to being dramatically different from the other two genre projects around it. On the other hand, the studio might believe the film will be so big that it doesn’t need to worry about competition from either film.

Of course, the real reason for scheduling the film’s release date could be a little bit of both — or none of the above — when it comes down to it.

As it stands now, Nolan’s film will go up against at least two other films that same weekend. Universal Pictures’ Pitch Perfect 3 is also scheduled to premiere July 21, as well as Lucy and The Fifth Element director Luc Besson’s sci-fi adventure Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, which stars Dane DeHaan, Cara Delevingne, and Clive Owen.

That month is shaping up to be a busy one for movie fans, with Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales also scheduled to hit theaters July 7.

While Nolan’s most recent high-profile project was the cosmic odyssey Interstellar, the celebrated filmmaker is currently making the promotional rounds in support of The Quay Brothers in 35mm, a retrospective on legendary stop-motion animators The Quay Brothers. Nolan not only curated the series of short films about the brothers, but also contributed his own short, simply titled Quay.

The great thing about a hit movie is that you tend to find out things during interviews, premieres, and press conferences that would have never surfaced otherwise. Dune: Part Two is one such movie. In the lead-up to the movie's blockbuster opening weekend, we've discovered Josh Brolin's hidden talents as a poet and photographer, Javier Bardem's dedication to his children, Zendaya's love for the sci-fi classic Metropolis, and Austin Butler's appreciation for The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.

The most recent revelation, however, tops all of those. In an interview with Vanity Fair, Christopher Walken, who plays Shaddam IV, the film's fearsome Emperor, explains why he came out of a four-year break from acting in films and joined Dune: Part Two. One reason was due to his admiration for the first film, which cemented Denis Villeneuve's status as one of the best sci-fi directors ever, and his appreciation of the sequel's impressive cast, which also includes Florence Pugh, Rebecca Ferguson, and Dave Bautista.

2023 belonged to Christopher Nolan. The British auteur is on the verge of winning multiple Oscars for Oppenheimer, a three-hour biopic about J. Robert Oppenheimer, the theoretical physicist behind the atomic bomb. Nolan is on a shortlist of filmmakers whose name alone can sell a film. Take Inception as an example. A film about dream stealing with complicated ideas and confusing equations isn't an easy sell. Yet, an emotionally moving story and visually stunning effects wowed audiences, resulting in a $839 million worldwide gross and four Oscars.

Inception is frequently mentioned on "best of" lists for the 2010s. While there are no direct comparisons to Inception, there are similar movie movies with the same themes and concepts. If you liked Inception, watch these three films, including another Nolan thriller, a sci-fi mystery from a terrific director, and an emotional romantic drama about heartbreak.
