The Pacific Rim sequel is still happening, says Universal Pictures

Rejoice, Pacific Rim fans. There will be more big-screen battles between Jaegers and Kaiju.

After removing the Pacific Rim sequel from its upcoming release schedule a while back (and disappointing everyone hoping to see more of the film’s giant robot-versus-monster brawls), Universal Pictures has released a statement confirming that a sequel to director Guillermo Del Toro’s 2013 sci-fi blockbuster is indeed still in the works.

“[Legendary Pictures’] Pacific Rim 2, originally scheduled for release on August 4, 2017, will be redated at a later time,” reads the statement from Universal. “The filmmakers, Legendary, and Universal Pictures are committed to having Pacific Rim 2, the sequel to 2013’s Pacific Rim, which generated more $411 million at the global box office, be the vanguard, fully-immersive experience that the franchise deserves. To this end, the decision was made to delay the production and release of Pacific Rim so that the creative team can continue in its efforts to exceed the amazing experience of the first film.”

Taking the place of Pacific Rim 2 in Universal’s schedule is Pitch Perfect 3, which was moved from its original July 21 release date.

While Pacific Rim fans should be optimistic about the fact that Universal felt the need to confirm development of the sequel, the lack of a release date — even a vague one — does leave some questions about when (if ever) we might see it.

The studio’s stated reasons for the delay are also worth noting, as Del Toro has previously expressed some interest in taking the world of Pacific Rim beyond the movie screen and has shown an affinity for immersive, virtual-reality technology like the Oculus Rift. During last year’s Comic Con International in San Diego, attendees were given the chance to “pilot” one of the massive Jaegers using the Oculus Rift, and Del Toro has indicated that he envisions the Pacific Rim franchise as a multimedia experience that takes advantage of the evolving technology available to modern audiences.

Although the first Pacific Rim underperformed in the U.S. to the tune of just $101 million, the film went on to earn $309 million internationally, for a respectable $411 million worldwide.

The sequel to Pacific Rim is currently being penned by Del Toro, Jon Spaihts (Prometheus), and Travis Beacham, and if/when it does arrive in theaters, it’s expected to be screened in 3D and IMAX theaters as well as standard venues.

3 underrated (HBO) Max movies you should watch this weekend (June 28-30)
A girl looks at a boy in House at the End of the Street.

June is surprisingly over, and with it, a great month for movies comes to a satisfactory close. You've probably watched Inside Out 2 or Bad Boys: Ride or Die or maybe even The Bikeriders. From blockbusters to indie fare, the theatrical movie business has been robust and healthy.

The same goes for streaming. Netflix had a big hit with Richard Linklater's Hit Man, while Amazon Prime Video recently premiered the latest bonkers season of The Boys. HBO and Max have been quieter, but their robust library speaks volumes to the streamer's high quality. The following three films are older, but are just as worth your time as new hits like House of the Dragon season 2.

As we head toward the end of June, it's worth reflecting on how we want to spend the rest of summer. For some, that's going to mean enjoying nice weather or getting some time in at the beach. For others, it might mean escaping from the heat, at least for a while, to check out a great movie.

If you fall into that second category, then we've pulled together a list of three great, underrated, titles available on Amazon Prime Video that are all worth checking out. Prime Video is home to some of the best movies available online, but it can be hard to find the ones you want. These three will at least give you a great place to start.

The best Netflix original series right now
Eric and Benedict Cumberbatch in Eric.

The era of Peak TV was also Peak Netflix, because the streamer seemingly had an endless supply of new original series. So far in 2024, that hasn't been the case. Whether we'll ever get the same level of content again seems unlikely for now. But even in a reduced capacity, Netflix still has a few new additions to its lineup of originals.

For the month of June, we're adding the '80s-set thriller, Eric, which stars Benedict Cumbebatch. Our other pick for the month is Supacell, which is Netflix's new British series that remixes some old superhero archetypes. That's not a very big selection for fans who always want something new, but this roundup of the best Netflix original series really does have all of the top options in one place for you. All you have to do is scroll down and make time to binge watch some shows.
