Legendary and Universal Pictures have released a new video featurette that looks at some of the ghosts of Crimson Peak and the home they haunt, as well as how the design of the film’s mansion set contributes to the overall spookiness of the environment.
The brief video focuses on one particular portion of the gothic mansion where the film is set: a dark corridor that Del Toro considers one of his favorite sets in the movie. Shaped like the negative image of a human body with sharp spikes ringed around its edges, the hallway would almost certainly look scary in daylight, and could easily become terrifying in the dark world of Del Toro’s film.
The video also provides an up-close look at one of the spine-chilling ghosts in the film — which will likely feature quite a few nightmare-inducing sequences.
Written by Del Toro and Matthew Robbins (Mimic), Crimson Peak follows an aspiring author played by Mia Wasikowska (Stoker, Alice in Wonderland) who is swept away to the family mansion of a charming, mysterious stranger (Tom Hiddleston), and finds herself torn between his affections and her love for a childhood friend (Charlie Hunnam). The film also stars Oscar nominee Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty) and Jim Beaver (Supernatural).
Back in March, acclaimed horror novelist Stephen King called Crimson Peak “gorgeous” and “terrifying” after seeing an early screening of the film.
“Crimson Peak electrified me in the same way Sam Rami’s Evil Dead electrified me when I saw it for the first time way back in the day,” wrote King.
Crimson Peak will arrive in standard and IMAX theaters October 16, just in time for Halloween.
