A&E to air new Frankenstein series starring Sean Bean

A new six-part Frankenstein horror series starring Game of Thrones actor Sean Bean has been acquired for stateside airwaves by A&E, according to Variety.

The Frankenstein Chronicles was created by British production house ITV, and features six hour-long episodes set in 1827 London. Bean plays inspector John Marlott, on a search for a murderer who leaves behind a trail of mutilated body parts which have been assembled into complete human forms.

Set in 19th century London, the show will include plenty of gas lamps, horses, and opium — a bust of an opium den is reportedly how Bean’s character stumbles upon the trail of Dr. Frankenstein, and or his monster, in the first place.

Given the recent successes of all things supernatural and zombie related, and a much-loved remake of the Sherlock Holmes canon by the BBC, a six part series on Frankenstein in foggy old London should be well received in America — as long as the new show doesn’t go anywhere near the pitfalls of 2014’s lambasted silver screen release, I, Frankenstein, that is.

ITV execs seem satisfied that won’t happen, with the company’s director of drama Steve November calling the upcoming series, “an epic re-working of one of literature and cinema’s most iconic stories.”

The creative forces behind the show include writer Barry Langford and writer/director Benjamin Ross, who have previous experience working together on the short film Torta Bluma. Game of Thrones producer Frank Doelger is also involved in the series.

Bean has kept busy since his character, Ned Stark, (spoiler alert) was killed off at the end of Game of Thrones’ premiere season. The actor has appeared in a range of roles, from bit parts in episodes of Family Guy and Robot Chicken, to a key role in Ridley Scott’s acclaimed new blockbuster The Martian. In fact, The Frankenstein Chronicles is the second TV series he has been involved with this year, alongside five film releases.

Viewers will have to wait to find out when they can see the new series. A&E has yet to announce when The Frankenstein Chronicles will be aired stateside.

3 underrated (HBO) Max movies you should watch this weekend (June 28-30)
A girl looks at a boy in House at the End of the Street.

June is surprisingly over, and with it, a great month for movies comes to a satisfactory close. You've probably watched Inside Out 2 or Bad Boys: Ride or Die or maybe even The Bikeriders. From blockbusters to indie fare, the theatrical movie business has been robust and healthy.

The same goes for streaming. Netflix had a big hit with Richard Linklater's Hit Man, while Amazon Prime Video recently premiered the latest bonkers season of The Boys. HBO and Max have been quieter, but their robust library speaks volumes to the streamer's high quality. The following three films are older, but are just as worth your time as new hits like House of the Dragon season 2.

The best Netflix original series right now
Eric and Benedict Cumberbatch in Eric.

The era of Peak TV was also Peak Netflix, because the streamer seemingly had an endless supply of new original series. So far in 2024, that hasn't been the case. Whether we'll ever get the same level of content again seems unlikely for now. But even in a reduced capacity, Netflix still has a few new additions to its lineup of originals.

For the month of June, we're adding the '80s-set thriller, Eric, which stars Benedict Cumbebatch. Our other pick for the month is Supacell, which is Netflix's new British series that remixes some old superhero archetypes. That's not a very big selection for fans who always want something new, but this roundup of the best Netflix original series really does have all of the top options in one place for you. All you have to do is scroll down and make time to binge watch some shows.
