LG is is pushing hard to make OLED TVs go mainstream, and its latest move should go a long way toward making that happen. Today, the company announced it has slashed prices on its next-gen OLED TVs by 30 to 45 percent on specific  models, including a newly introduced 55-inch 1080p unit coming in at $2,000, which LG highlights as an industry first.

The price reductions apply to the new flat EF9500 series and curved EG9600 series 4K Ultra HD OLED TVs. “LG is the first and only manufacturer to deliver OLED TV to U.S. consumers, and our vision is to make this revolutionary technology more attainable by more consumers at prices comparable to many LED TV models on the market,” said William Cho, President and CEO of LG Electronics USA.

According to LG, the company has made manufacturing more efficient, thereby allowing it to drop prices. The new 55-inch class Full HD Curved OLED TV, for example, is priced at $1,999; when LG sold its first-generation 55-inch class model two years ago, the price was a staggering $14,999. With LG’s new price tags, shoppers may increasingly opt for OLED instead of LED/LCD sets, as the cost is much more comparable while the former offers superior picture quality.

Here’s a complete breakdown on the price reductions:

EF9500 Series: Flat OLED 4K Ultra HD TVs

  • 55-inch class 55EF9500: New net price is $2,999 with $1,000 instant rebate
  • 65-inch class  65EF9500 New net price is $4,999 with $1,000 instant rebate

EG9600: Art Slim Curved OLED 4K TVs

  • 65-inch class  65EG9600: New net price is $4,999 with $1000 instant rebate

55EG9100: Full HD Curved OLED TV

  • New 55-inch class 55EG9100: Net price is $1,999 with an instant rebate of $500, starting week of Oct. 18

55EC9300: Full HD Curved OLED TV

  • Current 55-inch class 55EC9300 is now available for $1,799 while supplies last

As DT’s Caleb Denison has pointed out in several of his OLED TV reviews, OLED technology delivers perfect black levels while delivering impressive brightness, resulting in industry-best contrast that contributes to outstanding overall picture quality, with exceptionally wide viewing angles.

LG’s lineup of OLED TVs now includes 55-, 65-, and 77-inch class sizes, both curved and flat, and 1080p Full HD and 4K Ultra HD resolutions. While cost still puts these televisions out of reach for the average family, LG is certainly making moves to eventually change that.
