You can spend $600 on a new iPhone from Apple, or you can spend $10 for a new smartphone from Walmart. Sure, the names are held at varying levels of esteem, but when one is 60 times less than the other, it sorta makes up for the difference, right? For $9.82, you can own the TracFone-branded Prepaid Lucky LG16 Smartphone, which as Motherboard points out, actually comes with better features than the original iPhone (which was, to be fair, released over eight years ago). Still, if you know that you misplace, break, or otherwise render useless multiple more expensive smartphones over the course of the year, the Walmart option may not be such a bad idea.

With a 3.8-inch display, a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, a 3-megapixel rear camera, and a 4GB of storage included on its microSD card, you’re getting quite a deal for $10. And while it won’t run the newer Lollipop or Marshmallow OS, you’ll survive on Android 4.4 KitKat. Sadly, you won’t get any 4G LTE coverage with your bargain phone, but for $10, even 3G seems fair enough.

The sole review on Walmart’s website calls the phone “pretty darn good” for the price. “The phone’s screen is a decent size, and the touch accuracy feels good enough for typing in spite of the limited screen space for a keyboard,” the four-star review notes. “Overall, while this is not the best smartphone, it’s definitely a steal for $9.99,” the satisfied customer concludes, “I don’t regret buying it.”

With 7.3 hours of talk time and a battery life of 9.9 days on standby, the Lucky may not be the most high-tech, attractive, or fastest smartphone you’ll ever own, but it just may be the cheapest. So if you’re looking for a quick fix to get you through that dead time between contracts, or just want to know what $10 will buy you in smartphone world, head on over to Walmart and check out the Lucky. Even if it sucks, you’ll have spent less than the price of a large pizza.

What is vapor cooling? The fascinating tech keeping your smartphone cool
Cooper-based vapor cooling chamber used in a custom Xiaomi Mi Mix 4 smartphone.

Vapor cooling, synonymous with "vapor chamber" and "vapor chamber cooling," has been a common buzzword in the laptop industry for almost a decade. And like many things borrowed from laptop-makers, the term has also funneled down to the segment of performance-oriented smartphones in the last few years. Vapor cooling is among the most widely used smartphone technologies, and it helps with the dissipation of excessive heat generated during stressful workloads.

When we run a resource-hungry app or game on our smartphones — or record a video for a long duration — the phone's processor must do a lot of work to compensate for those things. Vapor cooling is one way to address it, and it's quickly becoming much more prominent in devices. But how exactly does vapor cooling work, and does it even matter? That's what I wanted to find out.

I don’t charge my phone at night because OnePlus broke me (and it’s awesome)
OnePlus 10 Pro charging port.

Here's a fun fact for you. I have absolutely zero idea as to what charge level my phone is at right now. It's on; I can tell you that. But what battery percentage is it at? I couldn't tell you. I couldn't care less and that's because I don't have to. At first, it was scary, but now it's just beautiful.

Here in the U.S., we don't really have to worry about charging phones; we charge them overnight. Maybe we set our phone down on one of the best wireless phone chargers, or we snap on a MagSafe charger (even on Android), or we simply plug the phone in. I used to be one of those people.

Fast charging the OnePlus 10 Pro: SuperVOOC vs. USB-C PD
OnePlus 10 Pro being taken out of a pocket.

Chinese companies have championed the art of charging smartphones at superfast speeds, and that especially holds true for brands under the BBK Electronics umbrella — OnePlus, Oppo, Realme, Vivo, and iQOO. Of these brands, Oppo leads R&D endeavors for itself alongside OnePlus and Realme, which use its proprietary technologies by rebranding them. Among the features that make Oppo one of the best smartphone brands for enthusiasts is fast charging.

At Mobile World Congress 2022, Oppo exhibited its 240-watt charging technology that can charge a smartphone fully in just 10 minutes. While this inexhaustibly fast-charging technology is yet to arrive on a commercial smartphone, Oppo and the companies under it, including OnePlus and Realme, are already launching phones with charging rates up to 150W. OnePlus' recently launched flagship device — the OnePlus 10 Pro — supports up to 80W charging, which the company has claimed can replenish the phone's 5,000mAh battery in just about 30 minutes.
