Justin Bieber’s comeback appears to be working swimmingly, as the 21-year-old pop singer has managed to dethrone boy band One Direction to achieve the most streams of any album on Spotify in a single week.

The singer’s new album Purpose, which includes such hits as What Do You Mean? and Sorry, clocked 205 million streams globally on Spotify, and 77 million in the U.S. alone for the first week of its release. By comparison, One Direction’s fifth album, Made in the A.M., was (only) streamed 106 million times, reports Billboard. That’s no small feat, though. The now four-man British pop group still broke the previous record of 90 million streams, held by The Weeknd’s Beauty Behind the Madness.

Many expect that Purpose will top the U.S. album charts, as Bieber’s loyal legion of fans have clearly shown their support for the Canadian singer’s attempt to get back into his music and shed the bad boy image. Bieber closed out the American Music Awards last night with a stellar performance that included a medley of tunes from Purpose. He also got tons of publicity when he cried from being overwhelmed at the support and positivity he received following his performance at the Video Music Awards earlier this year.

Even better news for The Biebs: not only has Purpose become his sixth number-one album to date, but it is also reportedly selling twice the amount it was projected to, reports Forbes. Popular tunes from the album were released earlier this year, including Where Are You Now, the singer’s collaboration with producers Skrillex and Diplo. The tune took home the American Music Award last night for Collaboration of the Year, and Bieber graciously handed the mic to the producing duo to give their thank you speech.

That said, Bieber has plenty of work ahead of him if he hopes to take the spotlight from the U.K. heart throbs. One Direction won Artist of the Year at the AMAs, as well as Favorite Duo or Group – Pop/Rock. But if the Spotify streaming numbers are any indication, Bieber is well on his way.

Apple Music may have made great strides in 2019, but Spotify remains on top of the music streaming industry that saw a significant boost in subscriptions last year.

Online music streaming subscriptions across the world increased by 32% in 2019, for a total of 358 million subscribers, according to the latest findings of Counterpoint Research. The firm attributed the steady growth of the industry to factors that include exclusive content such as podcasts, and promotions such as reduced subscription prices and bundle offers from carriers.
Spotify vs. Apple Music
Spotify continues to dominate, with 31% of the music streaming industry's total revenue and 35% of total paid subscriptions. Counterpoint analyst Abhilash Kumar said that Spotify was able to maintain its top spot due to promotions such as a free three-month trial for Spotify Premium, discounts, customized campaigns, and a focus on providing exclusive content to subscribers.

Like almost every industry right now, the music industry is struggling because of the coronavirus outbreak (officially known as COVID-19). Since many concerts and music festivals have been canceled, Spotify has announced new efforts to aid musicians in need.

Musicians will soon have the option to fundraise directly from their Spotify artist profile pages so that their dedicated fans can donate to them or a particular cause based on their request. All donations will go directly to the artist or the artist's organization of choice, and Spotify will not take any cut. We reached out to Spotify to find out when this direct donation feature will be available and will update this story when we hear back.

How to download music from Spotify for offline listening
How to download music and podcasts from Spotify: The downloads folder.

If you're a Spotify Premium user paying that premium Spotify fee, chances are you've taken at least some time curating playlists, liking songs, and using the platform's easy-to-use (and recently revamped) user interface to discover new and old music.

But sometimes all that music or your favorite podcasts aren't available if you find yourself without an internet connection to stream them from — like on a long plane ride or weekend camping trip in the sticks. That's where Spotify's offline listening feature comes in handy, allowing you to download playlists, albums, and podcasts through its desktop and mobile apps so you can still rock out while you're off the grid.
