After leaving a great many things uncertain at the end of the fourth season of the series, Girls appears to be diving into a long list of dangling plot threads when it returns to television. Among the elements being sorted out is one character’s move to Japan (Zosia Mamet’s Shoshanna), another character’s impending wedding (Allison Williams’ Marnie), and the continuing relationship drama for Hannah (Dunham). The trailer also features a brief appearance by Star Wars: The Force Awakens actor Adam Driver, who was a regular on the series since the first season before jumping into one of this year’s biggest movies.
Created by and starring Dunham, Girls has been nominated for and won multiple Primetime Emmy Awards and Golden Globe Awards, among other notable accolades. It also won the prestigious Peabody Award for excellence in 2012. Dunham serves as an executive producer on the series along with Judd Apatow.
Joining Dunham, Williams, Driver, and Mamet in the cast are Jemima Kirke as Jessica Johansson, Alex Karpovsky as Ray Ploshansky, Andrew Rannells as Elijah Krantz, Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Desi Harperin, and Jake Lacy as Fran Parker. The fourth season of Girls concluded in March 2015, but the series was renewed earlier in the year for a fifth season. Dunham has indicated that she plans to end the series after its sixth season if it’s renewed for another season after next year’s run.
The fifth-season premiere of Girls will air Sunday, February 21, on HBO.
