Development of the redesigned compact crossover is well on its way and test mules have been spotted with slightly larger bodies than the current model and new styling borrowed from the second generation Q7. Speaking of the Q7, it’s new MQB chassis will be the basis for the next generation Q5 as well, contributing to a weight loss of about 220 pounds. The Porsche Macan will also loan its suspension components to the new Q5.
Now to the good stuff: AutoBild is reporting that the 2017 Q5 won’t just make due with a 300-plus horsepower SQ5 variant but an even more potent RSQ5 designation. Under its hood will be a 2.5-liter five-cylinder turbocharged motor with 400 hp. Quattro all-wheel drive will be standard along with a quick-shifting automatic gearbox. The RSQ5 should match up nicely with BMW’s planned X3 M and its near-equal output estimates. The Porsche Macan Turbo will be a close competitor to the RSQ5 as well, so it will be interesting to see how the VW Group differentiates their performance.
As for the rest of the new Q5 range, they’ll each benefit from Quattro AWD standard. Since the subcompact Q3 crossover now takes the entry-level spot, the Q5 will move slightly upmarket in price and features.
Engine options borrowed from the A4 will include a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 252 hp and 273 pound-feet of torque and a 2.0-liter TDI (once it’s fixed) with 190 hp.Also in the works is a diesel-hybrid with yet unknown power and torque specs.
The 2016/2017 Audi Q5 should cruise into dealers sometime in 2016 after a debut at the Paris Motor Show in September. Audi’s crossovers have been carrying sales figures to new highs so a brand new Q5 and Q7 should keep the rally going.
