PlayStation Plus kicks off 2016 with free Grim Fandango, Dragon Age: Origins

Sony revealed that Double Fine’s classic adventure game Grim Fandango and BioWare’s acclaimed fantasy RPG Dragon Age: Origins will headline the first batch of PlayStation Plus games that service subscribers will be able to download free of charge starting in 2016.

January’s PlayStation Plus lineup includes six freebies in all, with the PlayStation 4, PS Vita, and PlayStation 3 each receiving a pair of free-to-download games starting next Tuesday.

PlayStation 4 owners will receive free downloadable copies of Hardware: Rivals in January. A revamped version of the PlayStation 2-era vehicular combat game Hardware: Online Arena, Hardware: Rivals boasts online multiplayer gameplay across multiple included maps, and weekly community events will keep the experience fresh in the months to come.

Also on tap for the PlayStation 4 next month is Grim Fandango: Remastered, an upgraded port of LucasArts’ 1998 PC game. The PS4 edition of Grim Fandango features a redesigned control scheme, improved character textures, a new soundtrack, and optional developer commentary. PlayStation Plus members will also receive the PS Vita edition of Grim Fandango: Remastered as part of next month’s lineup.

The PlayStation 3, meanwhile, will host free downloadable copies of BioWare’s RPG epic Dragon Age: Origins and EA’s Call of Duty-like first-person shooter Medal of Honor: Warfighter. Both games previously premiered at retail on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, and Dragon Age: Origins features a sprawling storyline that players can continue in the 2014 sequel Dragon Age: Inquisition on the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PCs.

Over on the PS Vita, PlayStation Plus members can expect to play the turn-based strategy game Legends of War: Patton for free next month. January’s final freebie for Sony’s portable platform is Nihilumbra, a stylish 2D puzzle-platformer from indie developer Beautifun Games.

January’s PlayStation Plus lineup will be free to download for subscribers starting on January 5th, 2016.

Astro Bot will reference one of PlayStation’s oldest memes
Astro Bot and its PlayStation character cameos, which include Aloy and Nathan Drake on the right.

The Astro Bot series is known for showcasing PlayStation history, with some incredible deep cuts and cameos. For the upcoming Astro Bot, which was officially announced during Sony's latest State of Play this week, that apparently comes in the form of a nearly 20-year-old meme.

In an interview with EW, Team Asobi head Nicolas Doucet mentioned some of the characters that players will encounter spread throughout the game's 80 planets. This includes some obvious inclusions, like Nathan Drake from the Uncharted franchise and Aloy from the Horizon games, but snuck into one of the paragraphs is mention of an island in the shape of a giant crab.

PlayStation State of Play returns this week, will feature 14 PS5 games
Three colorful PS5s float together in a line.

PlayStation will kick off the summer of digital video game reveal streams this week with a State of Play broadcast. The stream will take place at 3 p.m. PT on Thursday, May 30.

State of Play is one of Sony's primary livestream presentation formats. It tends to be slightly shorter than the company's flagship stream, the PlayStation Showcase. This State of Play is a significant one, though, as Sony's slate of first-party games for 2024 is entirely unknown at this stage. This stream should shed some light on what's coming later this year.
