The “shower” in this case has a meaning that is two-fold: The movie takes place during a baby shower, which is in turn interrupted by a massive meteor shower. However, this is no ordinary meteor event. The raining projectiles bring with them a scourge of bloodsucking aliens who attack the party and set the genre-bending hijinks in play.
Painted as a cross between the sci-fi alien adventure film Attack the Block and the female-led comedy starring Kristen Wig and Maya Rudolph, Bridesmaids, the new film appears to be another in the grand tradition of blended comedies, recalling recent comedic cocktails such as Cooties, and Zombeavers, but with a sci-fi twist, like Paul Fieg’s forthcoming female-led Ghostbusters film.
Speaking of Fieg, the Bridesmaids element appears to add an entirely new dimension to the film — one that seems more fitting for Hathaway, who audiences are used to seeing in more traditional roles. The fact that Hathaway is producing (and has been looking to get the film off the ground for a while now) seems to suggest she’s eager to sink her teeth into something totally out of character — and this just might be the perfect project.
The script for the film was penned by Jac Schaeffer, and Variety reports that the story was good enough to make Hollywood’s Blacklist last year, an aggregate of favorite projects compiled by sourcing over 600 production companies and film execs.
Put more simply, this film looks like it could be a whole lot of fun.
Producers along with Hathaway and Schaeffer include Adam Shulman, Andrew Lauren, and D.J. Gugenheim. Warner Bros. is reportedly ready to pick up the film for distribution. As such, there’s no date attached to the film as of yet, but we’ll be keeping our eyes on this one to see how it progresses as it picks up a cast and director, so stay tuned.
