Remastered Valkyria Chronicles on its way to PS4 in North America

A remastered PlayStation 4 version of Sega’s strategy-RPG Valkyria Chronicles will hit North America this year as both a downloadable title and as a boxed limited edition, available exclusively via pre-order.

Originally released for the PlayStation 3 in 2008, Valkyria Chronicles will boast a number of improvements and enhancements when it makes its PS4 debut later this spring.

Valkyria Chronicles Remastered upgrades the original game’s campaign with a 1080p-quality graphical boost and gameplay that runs at a consistent 60 frames-per-second. The remastered edition also includes all previously released DLC, including the Hard EX Mode, Edy’s Mission, Selvaria’s Mission, and Challenge of the Edy Detachment add-ons.

Valkyria Chronicles earned acclaim for its painterly art style and gameplay that mixed third-person shooting mechanics with turn-based strategy elements. The result requires players to carefully weigh their tactical options before deploying their troops against enemy armies in an alt-history take on World War II.

After remaining a PlayStation 3 exclusive for many years, Valkyria Chronicles made its PC debut in 2014 with an upgraded Steam version. The upcoming PlayStation 4 release will retain many of the improvements introduced in the game’s initial PC port, and will add new features like support for unlockable trophies.

Valkyria Chronicles Remastered is the first of two Valkyria Chronicles games Sega will release this year in Japan. Series sequel Valkyria: Azure Revolution is slated to launch in Japan this winter, boasting a “real-time battle system with added simulation elements.” A North American release for Azure Revolution has not been announced.

The North American version of Valkyria Chronicles Remastered will be released in a collectible Squad 7 Armored Case, giving players incentive to lock in their pre-orders early. Sega notes that the Squad 7 Armored Case “will only be available for pre-orders and a limited launch quantity,” though a standard edition is also set to launch in North America and Europe.

Valkyria Chronicles Remastered will be priced at $30. While the game targets a “spring 2016” launch window, a release date is not yet known.
