Did Naughty Dog use Assassin’s Creed concept art in its Uncharted 4 trailer?

Developer Naughty Dog courted controversy with today’s launch of an Uncharted 4 trailer that featured uncredited artwork from Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed series, according to a Eurogamer report.

Naughty Dog has since acknowledged its error and updated the trailer, describing the situation as “a regrettable mistake.”

Ubisoft Montreal employee Azaïzia Aymar first noted the similarity between a painting featured in the Uncharted 4 trailer and concept art from Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag earlier today. Members of gaming forum NeoGAF corroborated the claim, noting that the image in question is a near-complete copy of a specific piece of Black Flag pre-production art, minus a few key details.

The trailer was subsequently pulled from YouTube, and an updated version without the Black Flag art was uploaded in its place. The team at Naughty Dog afterward addressed the situation in a post at its official blog, acknowledging that the artwork was not properly vetted before today’s trailer launch.

“In our eagerness to get the story trailer out we made a regrettable mistake and didn’t thoroughly vet the art work used for an in game painting,” Naughty Dog explains. “We’ve already updated the trailer. We hold all artistry in high regard and take full responsibility for having allowed this to happen.”

The studio continued: “We want to sincerely apologize to everyone at Ubisoft, the Assassin’s Creed team, the original artist, and our fans.”

Naughty Dog found itself in a similar position in 2013 when cartographer Cameron Booth accused the developer of lifting a Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority map for its post-apocalyptic action game The Last of Us without permission. The developer later apologized for the oversight, and Booth afterward stated that “it seems as if matters will be resolved to everyone’s satisfaction.”

Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End launches exclusively for the PlayStation 4 on April 26.

Assassin’s Creed Infinity could use less content, not more
A Viking runs towards a building in Assassin's Creed Valhalla.

Assassin’s Creed is about to get a whole lot bigger. Ubisoft confirmed that it’s working on a new project called Assassin’s Creed Infinity, which will begin a new future for the open-world series. While Ubisoft didn’t share official details on what the game will look like, leaks indicate that it could be a major departure for the franchise that sees it expanding into a full-on live-service game.

According to a Bloomberg report, Assassin’s Creed Infinity will actually consist of multiple interconnected games. Rather than simply living the Viking life in Valhalla, players could potentially jump from setting to setting as the game is consistently updated with new content. If that’s the case, we could be looking at a gargantuan game even by Ubisioft standards.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey: Power through the grind with our leveling guide
Assassin's Creed Odyssey review

Assassin's Creed Odyssey isn't the first game in the series to have an RPG leveling system -- Origins had a similar setup last year -- but it's incredibly important in Odyssey. How important? If you don't actively seek out ways to earn experience points, you'll fall way behind and have an extremely hard, if not impossible, time completing the story. So, in the spirit of helping you through the grind, we've put together a leveling guide that should hopefully eliminate some of your hard times in Ancient Greece.
Check the recommended level or level range

If you open your map, you'll notice that each landmass has a level recommendation. The lowest-level areas, where you start, are under 10, while a few areas go up to the mid-40s and even 50. Keep in mind that although the loot is better in tougher areas, you're unlikely to survive for very long if you go exploring while severely under-leveled. This includes sailing your ship near high-level areas, as enemy ships will mirror the level of enemies ashore.
Know that story missions aren't enough
