Smaller cable packages — or none at all — have become more popular with Americans as consumers increasingly look to pay for only what they actually want to watch. Given the change, it’s not surprising that multiple companies — even steadfast cable and satellite companies — are hoping to snatch up some of the cord-cutter crowd. Now, AT&T has announced that it will introduce three new options for streaming DirecTV video content in late 2016.

The upcoming offers consist of DirecTV Now, DirecTV Mobile, and DirecTV Preview, which are described by AT&T as being “designed for customers looking for premium content with choice and flexibility in what they want to watch and how they want to watch it.” They will serve as lower-cost alternatives to traditional pay-TV service, allowing consumers to avoid annual contracts, satellite dishes, and set-top boxes. Users will be able to sign up, download the corresponding app, and access content from virtually any device, from smartphones to PCs to smart TVs. AT&T has not yet announced how much each service will cost.

The new streaming options’ offerings range from free, ad-supported VOD content to live programming, and more. Much of what users currently find on DirecTV will be available with DirecTV Now, including on-demand and live programming from various networks, as well as any desired add-ons, according to AT&T. The company intends to offer multiple content packages, giving customers the ability to choose the best fit for their interests. It sounds like it will rival Dish’s Sling TV, which saw its subscriber base continue to rise in 2015 to well over one million users.

DirecTV Mobile, on the other hand, will focus on a mobile-first user experience, as the name suggests. Viewers will be able to find premium video and made-for-digital content and watch it on their smartphones. Meanwhile, DirecTV Preview will be an ad-supported service with a selection of DirecTV content that can be viewed for free.

“These new video subscription models reflect the flexible content choices, viewing options and simple, transparent pricing that consumers want,” said John Stankey, CEO of AT&T Entertainment Group in a press release. “These offers will provide a broad range of customers with greater freedom and choice to watch, binge and even buy premium content, regardless of how and where they enjoy their entertainment.”

The new streaming options are expected to be available starting in Q4 2016.

Every month, you hear about some of the best new shows to stream on all the top streaming services. For October, for example, this includes shows like the second season of Loki on Disney+ and Apple TV+ original series Lessons in Chemistry. But there are plenty of other great shows flying under the radar, not only this month but every month.

In some cases, the shows surprise by moving into the respective streaming service’s top 10 list as they are discovered by more and more viewers. In other cases, it’s a much slower build until people realize this show is worth watching: consider Suits, which aired on USA Network and ended in 2019 but is finding a second life now through Netflix. So, what new shows might fall into a similar category this month? We have rounded up three hidden streaming TV show gems to watch this month that you might not otherwise have considered.

DirecTV Stream will have NFL RedZone, for what it’s worth

One of the most exciting things about the 2023 NFL season is that NFL Sunday Ticket is going to be available to a lot more people — basically, everyone, since it'll be streaming on YouTube TV and YouTube proper. This raises a good question: Does DirecTV have anything left for football fans?

Today, the NFL answered that question: NFL Network and NFL RedZone will be available on the legacy satellite service, on the DirecTV Stream streaming service, and on the old U-verse DSL service, keeping the dream alive after two decades. NFL RedZone is a channel that shows scoring opportunities as they're about to happen, hoping from game to game in the process. And NFL Network has the occasional game and plenty of news and features beyond that.

T-Mobile adding a free year of Apple TV+ to its most expensive plans

T-Mobile today announced that it's giving subscribers to its most expensive mobile plan a free subscription to Apple TV+, which normally costs $60 a year. Those who are subscribed to the Magenta Max plan — which costs $85 a month for a single line — will get Apple's streaming service for free. If you've got T-Mobile's Magenta plan, which costs $70 a month for one line, you'll get six months of Apple TV+ for free.

The perk takes effect on August 31, 2022, and it's good for the foreseeable future. (A previous version of this story stated it was just for one year, but that's legacy copy on T-Mobile's website for the old perk that's being supplanted.)
