Big Hero 6 is coming to TV: Animated series to premiere in 2017 on Disney XD

Disney has done well with its Marvel comics-inspired projects, not least of all with 2014’s Oscar-winning Big Hero 6. The studio has plans to do more with the story and announced today that it has begun production on a new animated TV series based on the comic books and movie. Big Hero 6 will premiere on Disney XD in 2017.

There series will pick up immediately following the events of the film, according to a post on Disney’s Oh My Disney blog. Hiro, a young robotics prodigy, and his robot, Baymax, will again be at the center of the story. This time, Hiro will be studying at San Fransokyo Institute of Technology, where he’ll face both academic and social challenges. On top of that, the city will be threatened by numerous scientifically enhanced villains, and it will be up to Big Hero 6 to stop them. Hiro and Baymax’s friends Wasabi, Honey Lemon, Fred, and Go Go will return to help try to save the day.

Disney XD tweeted out a few hints of what is to come in preparation for the series’ 2017 premiere, highlighting the role Baymax will play.

The series is produced by Disney Television Animation and comes from Kim Possible creators Mark McCorkle and Bob Schooley, according to THR. The duo also serve as executive producers alongside yet another Kim Possible vet, Nick Filippi, who is credited as a supervising director as well.

Big Hero 6 was well-received after its 2014 release. Not only did it bring in $657.82 million at box offices around the world, according to Box Office Mojo data, it took home an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.

Production on the Big Hero 6 TV series is underway, ahead of the show’s 2017 premiere.
