The next Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe could grow an extra set of doors

Mercedes-Benz now offers more variants of the S-Class than ever before, and the expansion is set to continue. British media outlets report that the next-generation S will be offered as a four-door coupe for the first time in the nameplate’s decades-long history.

The model might be called SEC, a name used from 1980 to 1991 on a coupe version of the stately w126-series S-Class. The original SEC had two doors like a standard coupe, but the 21st-century SEC will allegedly take the form of a four-door model that will share most of its middle section with the long-wheelbase version of the S sedan. It will receive a fast-sloping roofline inspired by the CLS, but it will look similar to the S-Class coupe when viewed from the front and the back.

The SEC will benefit from the same technological advances as the next S-Class, including a new active air suspension designed to make the ride as comfortable as possible. It will be offered with six- and eight-cylinder engines, and the lineup is expected to include a fuel-sipping plug-in hybrid drivetrain that might feature Mercedes’ wireless inductive charging technology. At the other end of the spectrum, the SEC could receive the next evolution of Mercedes’ V12 engine, and it’s safe to bet that at least one hot-rodded model tuned by Mercedes-AMG will launch a little later in the production run.

The next generation of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class will be introduced in 2020, meaning it will go on sale in time for the 2021 model year. England’s Car magazine speculates the SEC will be introduced in 2021, meaning we might not see it until the 2022 model year. Of course, a lot can happen by then, so only time will tell as to whether the CLS will get a bigger, more luxurious, and more powerful sibling.

Mercedes ‘Little G’ electric G-Wagon: Rumored design, release date
Concept image of the larger electric G-Wagon

Slowly, but surely, Mercedes-Benz is building electric versions of all of its different cars -- and it looks like a smaller electric G-Wagon may be coming up soon. Mercedes first announced an all-electric EQG in 2021, but even before the car is officially available to buy, the company is already planning a baby one too, affectionately dubbed the "Little G."

There's still a lot we don't know about the smaller electric G-Wagon. Here, however, is everything we do know so far.
Design
Design is a huge part of what makes a G-Wagon a G-Wagon. Because of that, it's almost certainly something that Mercedes won't compromise on.

The state of EV chargers in the U.S. right now: We have a long way to go
What a future Mercedes-Benz EV charging hub might look like.

Charging is changing in the U.S. -- and quickly. Tesla has all but won the war for the standard charging connector, meaning that charging will likely get a whole lot more convenient in the near future. But on top of that, charging networks are also expanding -- with the likes of Mercedes-Benz jumping in on the action.

Earlier this year, Mercedes announced that it would be building charging stations in partnership with MN8 Energy. More recently, it shared that it was finally planning on opening up the first of these stations in October.

With EV production ramping up, automakers can now shift attention to something more fun: making EVs that are engaging to drive, the kind that encourage you to take the long way home. Mercedes-Benz is putting its best people on the job.

For more than 50 years, AMG has been turning Mercedes luxury cars into race cars and hot rods—and the performance division is now working its magic on EVs. We’ve already gotten AMG versions of the Mercedes-Benz EQS and EQE sedans, but AMG is now upping the difficulty level with an electric SUV.
