The upcoming Star Wars road show will make your space opera dreams come true

Exciting, this is: The cinematic glory that is the original Star Wars trilogy is headed back to theaters, thanks to Alamo Drafthouse’s upcoming roadshow program, “The Return of the Trilogy.” Starting this August, the original three films — Episode IV – A New Hope, Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back, and Episode VI – Return of the Jedi — will get a limited theatrical release in cities across the country. There are shows in over 20 cities nailed down so far, and still others will be announced at a later date.

The roadshow brings the trilogy to screen in its 1997 re-release format. While the films themselves are at the heart of the event, Alamo Drafthouse wants it to be more than just a simple triple-feature. There will be specially curated video content before showings begin, as well as in between episodes. On top of that, attendees should expect props and special surprises.

“It’s always been a dream to show the original Star Wars trilogy again – somehow, some way,” says Alamo Drafthouse’s VP of Special Events Henri Mazza, in a statement. “Seeing the original trilogy on the big screen for the first time is a real life-altering event and just a supreme amount of fun. When the films became available to book for screenings like these, we jumped at the chance to do something big.”

Alamo Drafthouse’s show does sound like an excellent evening out. Fans are encouraged to dress up as their “favorite Jedi, scoundrel pilot, or rebel scum,” and we expect the special surprises to be fun. This is the quirky theater that orchestrated the ultimate Star Wars marathon leading up to The Force Awakens, after all.

While additional dates and locations remain TBD, The Return of the Trilogy’s current schedule is below. Tickets will go on sale for most markets on Star Wars Day, May 4 at ReturnOfTheTrilogy.com.
