Borderlands movie has a new writer for its 'Mad Max in space' adventure

The big-screen adaptation of Gearbox Software’s Borderlands game franchise appears to be gaining some momentum, with studio Lionsgate recruiting a new writer for the project.

Screenwriter Aaron Berg, who penned a draft of the screenplay for a third G.I. Joe movie and the upcoming period-piece spy thriller Section 6, has reportedly joined the writing team for Borderlands and will pen a screenplay for the video game adaptation. The film is being described as “Mad Max in space.”

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film is expected to be an edgy, R-rated adventure based on the hit franchise, which spawned three games that sold more than 26 million copies collectively. The original Borderlands pitted colonists stranded on a distant planet called Pandora against horrifying creatures awakened from hibernation.

Spider-Man franchise producer Avi Arad and his Arad Productions are developing the Borderlands movie, which was first announced in May 2015.

“Borderlands has a unique, story-driven narrative energy and rich multidimensional characters that position it to become a singular motion picture event,” said Arad in a statement accompanying the official announcement of the project last year.

There’s currently no official timeline for the film’s development.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe just got even bigger. The fourth wave of its Booster Course Pack DLC just dropped on Nintendo Switch, adding eight more tracks to the racing game. The list includes some classics from the GameCube, Wii, and Game Boy Advance installments of the series, but it's most exciting addition is an entirely original one: Yoshi's Island.

As you may have guessed, the new course draws inspiration from Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. On a visual level, it's one of the Mario Kart's most delightful tracks yet. The first leg has players racing through yellow rolling hills that are packed with little references to Yoshi's standalone games. From the starting line, you can see Poochy sitting on an oversized mailbox and catch some Chain Chomps delightfully bouncing around in the distance. Later, you'll spot some Goonies flying in the sky and a giant purple Blargg.

The AAA games industry has a clear interest in adopting more cinematic techniques. The most lauded titles of recent years -- God of War (2018) and Red Dead Redemption 2 are among them -- all seem like interactive movies in some respect. Many people point to aesthetics, like the continuous shot that frames Kratos, as clear examples of “cinematic” approaches to game design. And they are right to do so.

But the truth is that modern AAA production itself sometimes bears an even stronger, and less discussed, resemblance to cinema. Such is the case of New Tales from the Borderlands. Digital Trends sat down with James Lopez, Gearbox Software's head of production, and Amelie Brouillette, Gearbox Quebec's associate producer, to dig deeper into the team's first attempt at performance capture -- a modern technique that adds filmic detail to the already immersive world of Borderlands.
