They say their’s no honor among thieves, but clearly a few of the them who visit The Pirate Bay (TPB) feel an obligation to throw a few dollars at the admins, donating on average $9 a day in bitcoin micro-payments. Although this might not seem like much, it’s more than most other torrent sites bring in.
Donating to sites like TPB was something that a lot of administrators implemented a few years ago, offering those who wanted to support such sites a much more anonymous way to do it. The fact that bitcoins can be physically stored too meant that they were much harder for the authorities to seize — which is perfect for sites with questionable legality.
While bitcoin is certainly more popular today than it was when the system was implemented, it doesn’t seem to have gathered that much steam, even with The Pirate Bay showing its donation key on every page.
That may well be the reason that TPB actually does as well as it does though. In the case of KickassTorrents (KAT), the most popular torrent site in the world right now, over the past three years it’s earned only 0.96 bitcoins, or around $450 — which works out to just over 40 cents per day.
Admittedly, KAT does have its bitcoin key on its FAQ page only, so it’s far less visible, but regardless of site or placement, donations aren’t coming in thick or fast for any of these sites.
So as TorrentFreak points out, it probably shouldn’t be much of a concern for rights holders. When these bitcoin donation addresses were first revealed, a lot of lobby groups grew fearful that user support would make targeting advertisers and traditional payment providers for legal action much less viable. They were worried that it would allow torrent sites to be much more self sufficient.
In reality that’s proved not to be the case, as none of these sites with their millions of visitors could survive on these paltry sums. They trickle in, but it doesn’t seem like something anyone should be overly concerned about.
Have you ever donated a few parts of a bitcoin to any of your favorite torrent sites?
