Uncharted series star Nathan Drake makes his first-ever appearance on iOS and Android devices this week with the launch of Uncharted: Fortune Hunter, a mobile-exclusive puzzler from Sony.

Sony also revealed that players who solve Uncharted: Fortune Hunter‘s mysteries will unlock bonus content in the PlayStation 4 series sequel Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, which is set for release next week.

Uncharted: Fortune Hunter features characters and settings from previous Uncharted games, but shifts away from the series’ standard third-person shooter gameplay in favor of mechanics that are better suited for touch screens. The game features hundreds of puzzles in which players draw paths and tap on-screen hotspots in order to guide Drake to each level’s exit.

Available as a free download supported by in-app purchases, Uncharted: Fortune Hunter offers six major questlines that extend across four unique gameplay environments. After reaching specific gameplay milestones, players can unlock a series of “skins, relics and one-time-use boosters” for Uncharted 4‘s multiplayer mode.

Uncharted: Fortune Hunter‘s switch to puzzle-oriented gameplay mirrors Square Enix’s recent mobile releases Hitman Go and Lara Croft Go, which featured similar touch-driven, turn-based mechanics.

Nathan Drake’s mobile debut promotes the upcoming launch of Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, which is set to hit the PlayStation 4 next week. Developed by franchise creator Naughty Dog, Uncharted 4 is pitched as the final entry in the series, wrapping up storyline elements that have lingered since 2007’s Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune.

Fortune Hunter is the latest in a string of Uncharted games and related media that have premiered throughout the last year. October of 2015 saw the launch of Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection, a PlayStation 4 compilation release that bundled upgraded versions of Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, and Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception.

Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End launches digitally and at retail on May 10th.

Sony wants half of its PlayStation games on PC by 2025
A still from Horizon Zero Dawn.

Sony is looking to expand its presence on PC and mobile devices over the next few years, ultimately hoping to have at least half of its games on those platforms by 2025.

Sony's new goals were revealed during Sony's annual investor day, where a chart indicated that only a quarter of its games will land on PC and mobile this year. It appears the company has seen the benefits of its recent PC releases -- which have included previous PlayStation exclusives like God of War (2018), Days Gone, and Horizon Zero Dawn -- all of which have contributed to a substantial uptick in net sales on the platform. As a matter of fact, Sony is forecasting that its PC sales will skyrocket to $300 million in 2022, an impressive increase over last year's $80 million.

Core brings its creator-driven metaverse to iOS this summer
Deadmau5's Core game Oberhasli works on mobile.

Core is coming to iOS and Mac later this year. This game creation tool turned burgeoning metaverse was previously only available on Windows, but starting today, creators can begin developing their games for those new platforms ahead of Core's summer 2022 launch there.
Core is Coming to iOS and MacOS
This announcement comes ahead of the first anniversary of Core's early access launch. Developer Manticore Games plans to give the iOS port of Core fully compatible with the PC and Mac versions. If a creator on Core goes through the effort to optimize their game for mobile, it will be fully monetizable and can support crossplay with all versions of Core. The game's development tools will even allow its creators to make their games mobile-first or mobile exclusive and include features like touch controls. Manticore Games definitely seems adamant about becoming one of the first large-scale metaverse games on mobile.
"Metaverse" is a fairly nebulous term, but Manticore Games CEO Frederic Descamps has a specific idea of its meaning in the context of Core. Speaking to Digital Trends, he said Core's metaverse is "a social environment where you can experiment, explore, and not just play games but do all sorts of things," as well as a "new place for self-expression and creativity." Manticore Games is leaning into those metaverse elements with a new experience called Party Portals, where players can create and host game nights with various minigames like Texas Hold'em or Bowling.
Core is one of the more coherent and popular metaverse projects out there, so it will be interesting to see how its community adapts to mobile. While development tools for mobile are available today, Core won't launch for iOS and Mac until the end of July 2022 according to Descamps.
