The first issue the trailer delves into is what happened to Elliot (played by Rami Malek) after the night of the hack. What’s especially foreboding is the fact that he still doesn’t remember what he did — or didn’t do — during the three-day period, as is highlighted in the preview. That’s not the only big problem, though: The government is on to the hacker group.
President Barack Obama himself appears, albeit in real-life footage rather than as a guest star. “There hasn’t been anything like this in the past,” he says in the trailer. “The FBI announced today that Tyrell Wellick and fsociety engaged in this attack.” (The latter part of the statement was not dubbed by the president, according to CNN Money.)
There are also hints at the public response to their actions. Darlene (Carly Chaikin) mentions supporters and seems adamant that they not disappoint them. “They need to know we haven’t given up, that we meant what we said about changing the world,” she says. And we’re reminded that “there’s more work to be done.”
Everything hints at Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail delivering on his promise to Digital Trends at New York Comic Con that the series gets darker. “Season 2 gets really dark, really fast,” he said in January. “It’s even darker. We’re still nervous with every episode. We’re afraid people are going to hate it and call us out as frauds, or whatever. But we definitely love the attention.”
Esmail directs all 10 episodes of “season_2.0.” The cast also includes Christian Slater, Portia Doubleday, Grace Gummer, Michael Cristofer, and Stephanie Corneliussen. Mr. Robot season 2 premieres July 13 on USA Network.
