Bad news, old Android Wear watches may not get the latest software update

Proud owners of the first Android Wear watches that ever went on sale may find themselves lagging behind the newer models, because they won’t receive the latest Android Wear 2.0 software update. Announced in May, the update isn’t revolutionary, but it does add some great new features, including smarter watch faces, message improvements, and better fitness tracking ability.

LG was the first to break the bad news through its official Twitter account. The message referred to the original LG G Watch, and in reply to an enquiry about the update’s arrival time, the company said the watch had been discontinued, and therefore not on its list for Android Wear 2.0. While the G Watch has been superseded in the range several times, it’s still used, and several owners conveyed their displeasure at LG’s decision.

A few weeks later, Motorola also took to Twitter with news of the original Moto 360 smartwatch. Likely in wider use than the G Watch, thanks to it being the first with a stylish circular face, the device will also miss out on Android Wear 2.0. The Motorola Support Twitter account said in reply to a follower question that the watch definitely wouldn’t be updated.

The Moto 360 is less than two years old, making it a surprise that it won’t be supported any more, a move that suggests it’s a hardware issue. The first generation Moto 360 has 512MB of RAM and a 1GHz Texas Instruments processor inside. The LG G Watch also has 512MB of RAM, but is powered by a faster 1.2GHz Snapdragon 400. It’s identical internally to the G Watch R, and the Watch Urbane.

Samsung, Sony, and Asus haven’t spoken out about Android Wear 2.0 for the Gear Live, SmartWatch 3, or the ZenWatch respectively yet. Android is no stranger to missing updates, but there are potentially many smartwatch early-adopters who will be frustrated by the news. Owners of newer Android Wear watches that can make use of the new software’s more hardware-dependent features such as Wi-Fi and internal speaker systems, should all receive the new software in the near future.

The Mobvoi TicWatch E3 will be getting the new Wear OS 3 software update, a fact unknown when I first reviewed the watch, and it definitely blighted my overall opinion at the time. Despite the low $200 price and good performance, recommending you buy a smartwatch without any news on the arrival of an important software update seemed rash.

With the news Wear OS 3 will arrive, it seemed like the ideal opportunity to revisit the TicWatch E3 just over a month after my original review. The smartwatch hasn’t noticeably changed since then, but my opinion has, and that has ended up affecting the review score. Does this mean it’s now a recommended purchase? Yes, but it’s still complicated.
The waiting game
What’s so special about this new software? The new Wear OS 3, or simply Wear as it has also been known, platform is the joint effort between Google and Samsung to improve the performance, efficiency, and functionality of smartwatches over the current Google Wear OS software. Provided it lives up to the promise, it may change the way the TicWatch E3 feels to use, and that’s why we welcomed the news it was going to receive the software in the future.

Google’s Wear smartwatch software update list is short, and the wait is long

If you’re waiting for news on when, or if, your Wear OS smartwatch will receive an update to the new version of the software announced during Google I/O, there’s some good and bad news ahead. Google has listed the smartwatches eligible for an upgrade, and the timeframe expected, but neither are likely to be what smartwatch owners were hoping for.

The new version of Wear OS, which Google refers to as Wear OS 3 but had introduced it as Wear before, will eventually arrive on the Mobvoi TicWatch Pro 3 and its 4G/LTE connected counterpart, and the TicWatch E3, plus unannounced models from Fossil and Mobvoi expected later in 2021. It won’t be arriving very quickly either; as Google states that it “expects our partners to be able to roll out the system update starting in mid to second half of 2022.”

Your old Wear OS watch can, technically, update to the new Wear software

Old Wear OS smartwatches may still be capable of being updated to Google's new Wear platform, according to a Qualcomm statement shared this week. The company says that smartwatches powered by the Snapdragon Wear 4100 and Wear 3100 platforms can support Google's new software but declined to make any specific assurances beyond that of technical capability.

A Qualcomm spokesperson gave XDA Developers the following statement: “We are working with Google on bringing Wear OS 3.0 to Snapdragon Wear 4100+ and 4100 platforms. Snapdragon Wear 3100, 4100+ and 4100 platforms are capable of supporting Wear OS 3.0, but we are not discussing any specifics at this time."
