From the lack of a MicroSD card slot to how it handles its whopping 6GB RAM, it did not take long for consumers to raise questions regarding the OnePlus 3. Hoping to answer some of those inquiries, OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei and other members of the team took to Reddit to take part in an Ask Me Anything (AMA).

As far as the lack of any expandable storage is concerned, Pei said the 64GB of native storage the OnePlus 3 comes with is enough for most OnePlus users. According to Pei, the use of memory cards creates a negative user experience, since they are slower than the kind of internal storage the OnePlus 3 implements. Furthermore, the phone would need to make room for a memory card reader, thus making the device bulkier.

Moving on to the display, the OnePlus 3 implements what the company calls an “optic AMOLED” display. No, it is not a radical reinvention of the current AMOLED technology, said Pei. Rather, OnePlus tweaked the contrast and color temperature of its latest flagship’s display while also designing it to work well when viewed in bright conditions. In other words, “optic AMOLED” is nothing more than a PR term that means a slightly customized Super AMOLED display.

Related to the display technology is OnePlus’ choice to go with a 1080p display on the OnePlus 3 rather than joining other flagship phones in using a Quad HD display. According to Pei, using a higher-resolution display would only be beneficial for virtual reality, with such a display otherwise having its drawbacks, such as lower battery life. Because people will use the OnePlus 3 for non-VR purposes most of the time, having a 1080p display on the phone was the better decision to take.

As far as the OnePlus 3’s use of a 3,000mAh battery, Pei said such a battery size will get folks through a day with the phone. In addition, the phone’s Dash Charge capabilities ensures that charging the battery would not leave folks waiting very long.

Finally, a question most wanted answered was the aggressive RAM management on the OnePlus 3. On paper, the phone’s 6GB RAM would imply that folks would be able to open more than a few apps and not have them refresh when getting back to them. However, similar to what happened with the Samsung Galaxy S6, that has not been the case, as apps seem to close more prematurely than people expected.

Pei took to Twitter for this one, saying the aggressive RAM management on the OnePlus 3 is there to benefit the battery, thus offering a better user experience. Through XDA Developers, there is a technical “fix” that more than doubles the number of apps the OnePlus 3 holds in memory. However, this method has not been tested for possible performance or battery life issues, so try it at your own risk.

OnePlus surprises us with dazzling Android tablet and smartwatch
A press image of the OnePlus Watch 2 Nordic Blue edition.

OnePlus has launched a new Android tablet and a desirable special edition of the OnePlus Watch 2, both in beautiful color schemes that make us want them both right now. Unfortunately, that won't be easy if you live in the U.S.. The company has announced the OnePlus Pad Go tablet and OnePlus Watch 2 Nordic Blue edition smartwatch at an event in Helsinki, Finland, and both are currently only destined for a European release.

If you recognize the OnePlus Pad Go's name , it’s because the tablet was released in India last year, and it comes in the same stunning Twin Mint color scheme, which is as trendy as it gets. Although the company hasn't been forthcoming with all the details about the tablet, the specifications are unlikely to have changed from the model released in India. It has an 11.3-inch screen with a 2.4K (that’s 2408 x 1720 pixels) resolution, which it claims is currently the highest available on an Android tablet, and a 90Hz refresh rate.

I did a OnePlus 12 vs. OnePlus 12R camera test, and there’s a big difference
Genshin Impact Edition OnePlus 12R (left) and Flowy Emerald OnePlus 12.

OnePlus has had a very solid start to 2024 with the release of the OnePlus 12 and the OnePlus 12R. While both phones look very similar, one is a flagship, while the other is a more budget-friendly option with slightly lesser specs.

Though both devices' cameras appear similar at first glance, they’re actually quite different. In addition to different specs, only the OnePlus 12 has Hasselblad branding, meaning that it has better color calibration, white balance and exposure, and more. In short, photos you take with the OnePlus 12’s Hasselblad camera are probably going to look better.

The OnePlus 12 is the OnePlus phone I’ve been waiting for
A person holding the OnePlus 12.

Since it arrived, the OnePlus 12 has been sitting on a shelf, unused, behind my desk. Apart from a few days when I tested out the camera, battery, and performance, I haven't had a chance to really dig into the phone.

Don’t mistake this for indifference, though. I’ve been itching to use it for more than just those early few days, but due to various reasons, it hasn’t been possible until now. Was it worth the wait?
Why did it have to wait?
