Bentley will blow the doors off nonexistent rivals with a super coupe Bentayga

It would appear Bentley Motors is unsatisfied with merely building the world’s most powerful and fastest production SUV, aka the Bentayga. No, if the latest report from Auto Express proves true, the U.K. automaker desires to produce an even more viciously powerful model to embarrass lesser rivals and frighten others that haven’t even been built yet.

This “Bentayga Coupe” version will be akin to BMW’s X6 M and Mercedes-Benz’s GLE63 AMG S Coupe, but obviously more luxurious and apparently with more grunt at its disposal. Set for reveal (at least in concept form) at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show, the cross-coupe will share much of the Bentayga’s styling, but with a more steeply raked roofline. It will still have four doors, but seating will be limited to four occupants and rear headroom will be diminished.

Bentley Product Line Director, Peter Guest, told Auto Express that the Bentayga Coupe won’t be as concerned about off-road ability as the Bentayga (not that many of the normal SUV’s customers will take their $220,000-plus vehicle off tarmac anyway) and will instead be honed for on-road driving performance.

Besides the coupe styling, the new variant will look more aggressive, with a wider body, bigger wheels, stiffer suspension, and a sports exhaust. Power for the derivative will likely come from a tweaked version of the brand’s new 6.0-liter, twin-turbocharged W12 engine, which, in the Bentayga makes 600 horsepower and 663 pound-feet of torque. Bentley has already made it clear that future Bentayga versions (most likely including a “Speed” iteration) will make more power, and we can consider the Coupe to be among them.

In addition to added punch, the Coupe will almost certainly lose a few pounds compared to the Bentayga’s 5,340 pounds, which should further help driving dynamics. With the standard Bentayga able to hit 60 mph in just 4.0 seconds, the Coupe will certainly best that and may even exceed its stable-mate’s 186 mph top speed.

Pricing and production date left in question, Bentley certainly wants to let upcoming rivals like Rolls Royce’s planned SUV, Land Rover’s new flagship, Lamborghini’s Urus, and Mercedes-Benz’s rumored Maybach SUV know of its intentions to remain in the spotlight.

Mercedes-Benz G580 first drive: old-school off-roader goes electric
2025 Mercedes-Benz G580 from three quarter view.

American car buyers mostly know Mercedes-Benz as a luxury brand. But for decades, the automaker has also produced the tough, rugged G-Class (also known as the Geländewagen or G-Wagen), an SUV not afraid to get its leather upholstery muddy. And now, this iconic Mercedes is going electric.

The 2025 Mercedes-Benz G580 with EQ Technology — the final name of the SUV previously known as the EQG — isn’t the first electric off-roader. The Rivian R1S and R1T and GMC Hummer EV have proven that electric powertrains and off-roading are a great combination. But the electric G-Wagen is different because it’s based on an internal-combustion model — and a very traditional one at that.

Honda believes hydrogen semi trucks will make the case for fuel cells
Honda hydrogen fuel-cell semi truck.

Honda remains committed to hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles, but the market for those vehicles remains limited. So Honda is looking at other uses for fuel cells -- including commercial trucks.

To show how that could work, Honda converted a semi truck to fuel-cell power, replacing its diesel engine with three fuel-cell modules. Together, the three modules produce a combined 321 horsepower, and can propel the truck to a top speed of 70 mph. There's enough onboard hydrogen storage capacity for a 400-mile range with a full load, Honda claims.

Mercedes-Benz G580 vs Rivian R2: Is the much cheaper Rivian actually better?
2025 Mercedes-Benz G580 from three quarter view.

Mercedes-Benz has finally taken the wraps off of the new "Mercedes-Benz G580 with EQ Technology." Yeah, it's a mouthful, but it's basically a new electric G-Wagon. It looks a lot like the G-Wagon you know and love, but with an electric powertrain and a battery. It's not the only electric SUV out there, however, and there are some great ones -- like the Rivian R2.

Both the Mercedes G580 and the Rivian R2 have a lot going for them, but they also approach the electric SUV slightly differently. Is one better than the other? I put the two head-to-head to find out.
Design
The approach that the two vehicles take to design is quite different -- and you might like one better than the other.
