Ford, Toyota team up to build better hybrid trucks and SUVs

Auto manufacturing giants Ford Motor Corp. and Toyota Motor Corp. announced today plans to collaborate on the development of a new rear-wheel-drive hybrid system for pickup trucks and sport-utility vehicles. The preliminary partnership deal follows the Obama administration’s recently announced plans to drastically increase fuel-efficiency standards over the next 15 years.

The plan between the two car companies, both of which are currently leaders in the hybrid car market, requires that vehicles based upon the new hybrid system go on sale within the next decade. The new system will be integrated into the future vehicles of each company independently from one another, and they will sell their vehicles separately. (In other words, the new hybrid trucks and SUVs will not carry both the Ford and Toyota brand names, as the development partnership might imply.)

Ford and Toyota will also work together on the development of “safer, more secure and more convenient” in-car communications systems, as well as “Internet-based” services, according to a statement released by the companies today.

The companies say that they decided it would be more beneficial to work together on creating the next-generation of hybrid vehicles than to compete against each other.

“By working together, we will be able to serve our customers with the very best affordable, advanced powertrains, delivering even better fuel economy,” said Ford President and CEO Alan Mulally. “This is the kind of collaborative effort that is required to address the big global challenges of energy independence and environmental sustainability.”

The new fuel efficiency standards set forth by the Obama administration last month requires carmakers to increase the average miles-per-gallon rating of their entire fleets up to a minimum 54.5 MPG by the year 2025. Increasing the fuel efficiency of their most egregious gas guzzlers (i.e. trucks and SUVs) with a new hybrid system allows Ford and Toyota to comply to the government’s new standards more easily.

Toyota Highlander

Regardless of the trim you get, the Highlander and Highlander Hybrid come well equipped with lots of tech and driver-assistance features. The base, fleet-only L and LE trims come with an 8.0-inch touchscreen (the same as the Explorer), Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa compatibility, SiriusXM satellite radio, and five USB ports. The upgraded infotainment system found in the Limited trim adds a navigation system and an 11-speaker JBL audio system. The top system (optional in the Limited and standard on Platinum) adds a large 12.3-inch touchscreen (larger than the Explorer's). There are two sizes for the digital instrument cluster screen; the two base trims get a 4.2-inch screen, but the others get a larger 7.0-inch display that's smaller than the Explorer's. Some other notable tech features include wireless smartphone charging, a rearview mirror camera, and a 10.0-inch head-up display.

Ford didn’t invent the SUV, but executives knew a trend when they saw one. Just as the 2021 Bronco targets the Jeep Wrangler, the original Bronco targeted the Jeep CJ, the brand’s first civilian model. Ford actually built Jeeps during World War II alongside Willys Overland (you can spot a Ford-built Jeep by the letter “F” stamped into most parts), but after the war, Willys retained the rights to the design.

Former G.I.s began buying military surplus Jeeps, as well as Willys-manufactured civilian models, but Ford thought it could do better.

Electric SUV co-developed by Subaru, Toyota may not appear until 2025

Subaru and Toyota have entered into an agreement to co-develop electric cars, but the first product of that partnership may not appear for several years. Subaru unveiled a mockup of an electric SUV at a technology briefing in Japan, but wouldn't offer a more specific launch date than "before 2025," according to Automotive News Europe. What's more, Subaru's CEO said the United States will not be a priority for electric models.

The mockup had a tall SUV body, with a low roofline and steeply raked rear window, according to Automotive News Europe, giving it a sleeker look than more traditional models like the current Subaru Forester. Black plastic cladding over the wheel arches, similar to the Subaru Crosstrek, is meant to give the vehicle a more rugged appearance. The mockup also had cameras in place of exterior mirrors, according to Automotive News Europe. Some production models, including the Lexus ES and Audi E-Tron, have camera mirrors in certain markets, but the technology is not currently legal in the U.S.
