Even by concept car standards, Infiniti’s modular, transforming Syntaptiq is nuts

Now in it’s eleventh year, the LA Auto Show Design Challenge is back to invade our imaginations and have us begging our favorite manufacturers, “Why haven’t you made this yet?”

This year’s theme: “Sensing the Future: How Will Cars Interact with us in 2029?”

The competition is packed as manufactures like Acura, Honda Tokyo, Peterbilt Motors, and Chinese entrant, Qoros all compete for bragging rights. Other studios showcasing their designs are CALTY Design Research, Mercedes-Benz Advanced Design Center California, Nissan Design America Inc., Subaru Global Design Team, Volkswagen Group of America Design Center, as well as a select group of design student work will be on display.

Infiniti SYNAPTIQ

Infiniti Deisgn San Diego’s submission, SYNAPTIQ, is centered around a modular humanoid pod that can transform into three different vehicles. This adrenaline-inducing machine is controlled by a spinal lock attachment S.U.I.T. (Symbolic User Interface Technology), which bonds driver and machine.

The vehicle is designed to be entered into a unique triathlon competition event, the A.R.C. (Air, Rally, Circuit). The first F1 style stage spans from Los Angeles to Las Vegas. The second stage throws you into the desert, buggy style, in a race to the Grand Canyon. There, the final stage ignites your best Lego Movie impression and into the air you go to jet your way around virtual pylons back towards the finish line in Los Angeles.

Again, why haven’t they made this yet?

The final competition concepts will be on display in the Design Gallery of the LA Auto Show throughout the entire show, November 21 to 30, 2014.

ID. SPACE VIZZION CONCEPT profile

Volkswagen unveiled yet another concept car in its ID series of electric vehicles at the 2019 Los Angeles Auto Show. With previous ID concepts showcasing hatchback, crossover, and even dune buggy designs, you'd think VW would be out of ideas. But the Volkswagen ID.Space Vizzion promises something different. Previewing a possible production model that could launch in 2021, Volkswagen claims it will defy categorization.

The ID.Space Vizzion will combine "the aerodynamic characteristics of a Gran Turismo with the spaciousness of an SUV," according to Volkswagen. The concept car has a tall, upright roofline, but without the ground clearance normally associated with SUVs. It looks a bit like the recently discontinued Ford Flex, which also tried to combine car and SUV styling elements. It also means the ID.Space Vizzion looks a bit like a minivan without sliding doors.

Audi has picked the 2019 Los Angeles Auto Show to make the global debut of the 2020 e-tron Sportback. Several other models will make their global debut here as well; the 2020 RS models including the Audi RS 6 Avant and the RS 7, and -- as a highlight -- the global debut of the high performance SUV, the Audi RS Q8.

The e-tron Sportback is the most anticipated debut for fans of Audi, this being only the second all-electric vehicle produced by the German automaker. The five-passenger SUV coupe is equipped with standard electric quattro all-wheel drive and is expected to get just over 200 miles of range on a full charge. It will accept a 150 kilowatt DC charge that in a brief 10 minutes can give you 54 miles of range. Audi will give e-tron owners 1,000 kWh of charging to use at Electrify America fast-charging stations within the first four years of ownership.
