Speedball: Mazdaspeed3 concept could debut at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show

The current Mazda3 is a pretty good small car. It’s as nice to drive as it is to look at, and is available with a decent amount of tech features for a car in its segment.

Yet there’s one thing missing.

Almost as soon as Mazda unveiled this generation, there’s been speculation about when the Mazdaspeed3 performance model will make a comeback.

Fans might not have to wait much longer because, according to Australia’s Motoring, a concept version of the new Mazdaspeed3 is set to appear at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show this fall.

The Mazdaspeed3 (known as the MPS in other markets) will reportedly front a mid-cycle for the entire 3 lineup debuting at the German auto show.

Powering the concept and eventual production version will be a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, producing 295 horsepower.

This engine will also power the next-generation CX-9 crossover, which will reportedly debut at the 2015 Los Angeles Auto Show in November.

To put all of that power to the ground, the next Mazdaspeed3 is also expected to get all-wheel drive, in place of the previous models’ front-wheel drive.

With nearly 300 hp and four driven wheels, Mazda’s hot hatch looks ready to move up a rank in the hierarchy.

Rather than compete with more mainstream models like the Ford Focus ST and Volkswagen Golf GTI, the Mazda looks poised to take on the Focus RS, Golf R, and Subaru WRX STI.

That means it will likely be priced to match those heavy hitters as well. If so, it could cost more than $35,000.

As with the Ford, Subaru, and VW, this would probably price the Mazda out of the reach of the younger buyers that want it most, but pays for the hardware the to make it a more capable and well-rounded performance car.

The 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show doesn’t open until September, and a lot can happen between now and then. But whatever form it takes, we’re eager to see the Mazdaspeed3 back in showrooms.

Mercedes-Benz G580 first drive: old-school off-roader goes electric
2025 Mercedes-Benz G580 from three quarter view.

American car buyers mostly know Mercedes-Benz as a luxury brand. But for decades, the automaker has also produced the tough, rugged G-Class (also known as the Geländewagen or G-Wagen), an SUV not afraid to get its leather upholstery muddy. And now, this iconic Mercedes is going electric.

The 2025 Mercedes-Benz G580 with EQ Technology — the final name of the SUV previously known as the EQG — isn’t the first electric off-roader. The Rivian R1S and R1T and GMC Hummer EV have proven that electric powertrains and off-roading are a great combination. But the electric G-Wagen is different because it’s based on an internal-combustion model — and a very traditional one at that.

Honda believes hydrogen semi trucks will make the case for fuel cells
Honda hydrogen fuel-cell semi truck.

Honda remains committed to hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles, but the market for those vehicles remains limited. So Honda is looking at other uses for fuel cells -- including commercial trucks.

To show how that could work, Honda converted a semi truck to fuel-cell power, replacing its diesel engine with three fuel-cell modules. Together, the three modules produce a combined 321 horsepower, and can propel the truck to a top speed of 70 mph. There's enough onboard hydrogen storage capacity for a 400-mile range with a full load, Honda claims.

Mercedes-Benz G580 vs Rivian R2: Is the much cheaper Rivian actually better?
2025 Mercedes-Benz G580 from three quarter view.

Mercedes-Benz has finally taken the wraps off of the new "Mercedes-Benz G580 with EQ Technology." Yeah, it's a mouthful, but it's basically a new electric G-Wagon. It looks a lot like the G-Wagon you know and love, but with an electric powertrain and a battery. It's not the only electric SUV out there, however, and there are some great ones -- like the Rivian R2.

Both the Mercedes G580 and the Rivian R2 have a lot going for them, but they also approach the electric SUV slightly differently. Is one better than the other? I put the two head-to-head to find out.

The approach that the two vehicles take to design is quite different -- and you might like one better than the other.
