The newly emancipated Mercedes-Maybach brand has been relatively quiet over the past couple of months. Finally breaking its silence, the company has announced plans to reveal a new, head-turning coupe called Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 during the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance that will kick off in just a few short days.

What strikes you the minute you lay eyes on the 6 is its length; it’s very, very long. The only official detail that Mercedes has released at this point is that the yet-unnamed model stretches nearly 236 inches long. In comparison, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe measures 198 inches from bumper to bumper, and the Rolls-Royce Wraith checks in at 207 inches long. Its front end wears thin LED headlights, a wide grille with pronounced vertical slats, and a three-pointed star emblem on the hood.
While there are no technical details to share, we don’t imagine that Mercedes-Maybach would go to the trouble of developing a coupe with a hood as long as the Mississippi is wide just to shove a turbocharged four-cylinder in the engine bay. It’s not unreasonable to assume that the coupe will use an evolution of the twin-turbocharged 6.0-liter V12 engine that’s found between the fenders of the S600 limousine, among other Mercedes models. The mill makes 523 horsepower between 4,900 and 5,300 rpm and 612 pound-feet of torque from 1,900 all the way up to 4,000 rpm in its initial state of tune.
Another point that remains unclear is whether the 6 is a preview of a production model, or simply a wild, one-off concept designed for the auto show circuit. It could hint at a S-Class Coupe-based model for the Mercedes-Maybach brand, or it could be a follow-up to the unanalyzable Maybach Exelero concept that debuted in 2004.
All told, the teaser image asks more questions than it answers. We’ll bring you more details about the coupe — and a full set of live images — as soon as it’s unveiled on the Pacific coast on August 21.
