NY Auto Show preview: Shelby’s 1200bhp Mustang has the power of a Bugatti Veyron at 1/10th the cost

2013 Shelby 1000 S/C Mustang front three quarterWhat’s the definition of overkill? Ford already sells the Shelby Mustang GT500, which has 662 horsepower and a claimed top speed of 202 mph, but Shelby American thought it could do better. The company founded by automotive legend Carroll Shelby will show the 1000 S/C, a 1,200 hp Mustang, at the New York Auto Show later this week.

Both Shelby cars evoke their namesake, who built the Cobra and the original GT350 and GT500 hi-po Mustangs. While Ford’s GT500 is developed in-house, Shelby American is an aftermarket tuner, allowing it to go a little (okay, a lot) crazier.

You might remember that Shelby unveiled a Mustang 1000 at last year’s New York show, but that car was a little half-baked. It used the 5.4-liter supercharged V8 from the 2012 GT500, and came in two flavors: street legal 950 hp, and track-only 1,100 hp.

Not to look a gift horse in the mouth, but 950 hp isn’t 1,000 hp, which is why all of Shelby’s customers opted for the 1,100 hp version, even if they couldn’t take their cars to the drive-in.

That’s why Shelby ditched the 5.4 for the 5.8-liter supercharged V8 from the 2013 GT500, the one that goes 202 mph. The result is a street legal 1,200 hp at the flywheel, meaning it’s probably closer to an even 1,000 hp at the wheels. However, the 2013 1000 S/C won’t pass California emissions tests.

All that power is routed through a reinforced six-speed manual transmission. Shelby hasn’t published performance numbers, but we’d be interested in knowing how much faster this Mustang goes, now that it makes roughly the same power as a Bugatti Veyron.

2013 Shelby 100 S/C Mustang frontThe Shelby 1000 S/C will be less expensive than a Veyron, too, but it won’t be cheap. The conversion costs $154,995, on top of the cost of a new 2013 GT500, which starts at $54,995.

Shelby will take the wraps off its latest exercise in overkill at the New York Auto Show on Thursday. It will also show a new concept vehicle, one that won’t be based on the Mustang. That could mean a return of the Shelby F-150 truck, or maybe Shelby’s first-ever van.

Is a 1,200 hp Mustang that costs nearly $210,000 too much, or not enough? Let us know in the comments.

Mercedes-Benz G580 first drive: old-school off-roader goes electric
2025 Mercedes-Benz G580 from three quarter view.

American car buyers mostly know Mercedes-Benz as a luxury brand. But for decades, the automaker has also produced the tough, rugged G-Class (also known as the Geländewagen or G-Wagen), an SUV not afraid to get its leather upholstery muddy. And now, this iconic Mercedes is going electric.

The 2025 Mercedes-Benz G580 with EQ Technology — the final name of the SUV previously known as the EQG — isn’t the first electric off-roader. The Rivian R1S and R1T and GMC Hummer EV have proven that electric powertrains and off-roading are a great combination. But the electric G-Wagen is different because it’s based on an internal-combustion model — and a very traditional one at that.

Honda believes hydrogen semi trucks will make the case for fuel cells
Honda hydrogen fuel-cell semi truck.

Honda remains committed to hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles, but the market for those vehicles remains limited. So Honda is looking at other uses for fuel cells -- including commercial trucks.

To show how that could work, Honda converted a semi truck to fuel-cell power, replacing its diesel engine with three fuel-cell modules. Together, the three modules produce a combined 321 horsepower, and can propel the truck to a top speed of 70 mph. There's enough onboard hydrogen storage capacity for a 400-mile range with a full load, Honda claims.

Mercedes-Benz G580 vs Rivian R2: Is the much cheaper Rivian actually better?
2025 Mercedes-Benz G580 from three quarter view.

Mercedes-Benz has finally taken the wraps off of the new "Mercedes-Benz G580 with EQ Technology." Yeah, it's a mouthful, but it's basically a new electric G-Wagon. It looks a lot like the G-Wagon you know and love, but with an electric powertrain and a battery. It's not the only electric SUV out there, however, and there are some great ones -- like the Rivian R2.

Both the Mercedes G580 and the Rivian R2 have a lot going for them, but they also approach the electric SUV slightly differently. Is one better than the other? I put the two head-to-head to find out.

The approach that the two vehicles take to design is quite different -- and you might like one better than the other.
