Rest easy, speeders, this Chevy Corvette police car is on a mission of goodwill

A Chevrolet Corvette police car might seem to make sense for the land of the autobahn, but this German police-liveried ‘Vette isn’t what it seems. The Corvette is the latest car to play cop for a very unusual public-safety program.

In most countries, regulators and and law enforcement aren’t too enthusiastic about modified cars. But since 2005, the German Federal Ministry of Transport and the country’s Association of Automobile Tuners have collaborated on “Tune It! Safe!,” a campaign for responsible vehicle modification. The program encourages owners to modify their cars, as long as they do it within legal limits.

Overall, it seems like a good compromise between safety and emissions concerns, and Germany’s deeply-ingrained tuner culture. Tuners like Brabus and Ruf are accorded a more privileged status than their counterparts in other countries, and their cars are viewed with the same reverence as the OEM models they’re based on. And the program gives tuners an opportunity to build cool show vehicles like this Corvette police car.

Dressed in full German Polizei livery, the police car is based on the current Corvette Stingray, and was built by TIKT Performance. It features a full carbon fiber body kit, including front lip spoiler, fender flares, and side skirts. Staggered (19-inch front, 20-inch rear) RR-1 forged alloy wheels and a full complement of flashing lights complete the transformation.

Interestingly, there don’t seem to be any modifications under the hood. The 6.2-liter V8 is listed as having 460 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque, the same as a stock Stingray with the factory-option performance exhaust. That’s still enough for a 0 to 60 mph time of around 4.0 seconds. The police car has a seven-speed manual transmission, which might make things a little tricky if a hypothetical cop needs to use the radio, or grab a donut.

The Corvette is the latest in a series of flashy police cars built for the Tune It! Safe! program. Other cars unveiled over the years have included an Audi R8 tuned by Abt, and a Brabus-tuned Mercedes-Benz G-Class.

It’s easy to forget, but even an average car is now packed with advanced tech
new car vs old tech 2020 volkswagen passat and 1977 dasher

The 2020 Volkswagen Passat is an unremarkable car. It’s not a bad car, but it doesn’t push the boundaries of technology, design or engineering in any appreciable way. It will get five people from place to place comfortably, safely, and efficiently without making much of an impression. But even an unremarkable car like this is absolutely brimming with tech. It just takes the right perspective to notice it.

Volkswagen invited Digital Trends to Los Angeles not only to drive the 2020 Passat (which receives a significant update for the new model year) but also to celebrate the brand’s 70th anniversary in the United States. In the interest of nostalgia (and appeasing us journalists) VW brought out a fleet of classic cars, including the Passat’s ancestor – a first-generation 1977 Volkswagen Passat, which was sold as the Dasher in the U.S. The 2020 Passat may feel humdrum among its modern competition, but it still makes the Dasher feel like a horse and buggy.
Back to the beginning
VW took a big risk inviting us to drive its vintage cars, with the company’s back catalog is full of fantastic icons like the Beetle and Microbus. Modern Volkswagens are good cars, but they lack the character of the older stuff. That’s fully apparent when you compare the 2020 Passat to its 1970s predecessor.

The Kia EV3 could be the cheap electric SUV we’ve been waiting for
White Kia EV3

The Kia EV9 was already one of the cheapest ways to get an electric SUV, but now the company is taking things to the next level. After teasing the Kia EV3 last year, the car is now official.

The EV3 is built to be a slightly smaller, cheaper version of the EV9 -- following the path of the Rivian R2, which arrived after the Rivian R1S. It's certainly not as technologically advanced as the EV9, but it still looks unmistakably like a modern Kia, and is clearly a sibling of the larger SUV. On the outside, the vehicle has the same split taillights and very similar Tiger Face front. But it is quite a bit smaller. The vehicle will be available in nine finishes -- however only "Aventurine Green" and "Terracotta" are being announced right now.

Kia EV3: release date, performance, range, and more
White Kia EV3

Kia is on a roll. Hot on the heels of the success of the Kia EV6 and EV9, the company is already announcing what could be its cheapest electric vehicle yet -- the Kia EV3.

The Kia EV line seems to follow the rule of lower numbers indicating a lower price — and if so, the EV3 will end up being the cheapest electric car Kia has released to date. That, however, thankfully doesn’t mean that the EV3 will be a low-end car — it just means that Kia may be pushing the boundaries on electric car pricing.
