A prototype of Tesla’s Model X crossover was caught testing in a former naval yard

Tesla’s Model X is long overdue, but at the very least, it looks like the EV automaker is hard at work putting the final touches on the electric crossover. Thanks to a new video posted on YouTube, we have a small idea of just how far along the project seems to be, as well as what it looks like on the move.

Captured by an amateur videographer in Alameda, CA, the camo’d Model X can be seen doing certain dynamic test runs in an area that used to be a naval air station. The lucky filmmaker happened to be at a nearby skate park where he discovered the test taking place, whereupon he grabbed footage of it in action on his iPhone.

The best camera is the one you have with you, as the saying goes.

We don’t know what exactly is being tested here, but we can see the vehicle testing out some hard braking performance and doing some tight loops in the open area, silent save for the tires squealing under the pressure. Nothing of the video shows any chase car or Tesla team members capturing data of some kind, but we can’t even be sure the Model X was there for very long. Indeed, from the video, it seems like the Model X quickly flees the scene, probably aware that this test was bound to garner some attention.

Tesla’s delay of the vehicle is an unusual misstep for the fledgling company. As this is Tesla’s second original vehicle, fans and critics alike are eager to see if this sophomore endeavor will be as successful as the Model S sedan.

Currently, the all-wheel drive electric crossover is delayed until the third quarter of this year, with the first of its run already reserved by eager pre-order customers.

Tesla Model S vs. Model X: Which is right for you?
Tesla Model X

The Tesla Model S was the original cool electric car, boasting a sleek and stylish design and the ability to go superfast. But there's another premium Tesla in the lineup that's also pretty darn quick -- and it offers a whole lot more space to boot. The Tesla Model X offers the same design aesthetic as other Tesla cars, along with a superpowerful electric motor and some other features that you can't find on any other Tesla.

But that doesn't mean it's better than the Model S. In fact, it's not -- it's just different. But which is the better option for your needs? Here's a look at the two cars and what makes them different -- or the same.
Design
Perhaps the most notable difference between the two cars is their design. The Model S is a smaller sedan, while the Model X is marketed as an SUV (though it's perhaps more of a crossover). Regardless of marketing, however, the Model X is basically much larger than the Model S.

Tesla Model 3 vs. Polestar 2: Which electric sedan reigns supreme?
A Tesla Model 3 electric car.

The Tesla Model 3 has long been a go-to for those who want a reasonably priced EV that's still able to offer important perks like long range. But that doesn't mean there isn't competition. In fact, over the years a number of great electric sedans have popped up, like the Polestar 2.

Polestar itself has developed quite a reputation for building high-quality cars. It makes sense. While Polestar itself is a relatively new company, it's owned by Volvo and at this point, shares many design elements with Volvo cars.

BMW iX vs Tesla Model Y: miles apart on price, but closer than you think
A 2023 BMW iX M60.

The Tesla Model Y is often considered the go-to pick for those who want a large electric crossover, and for good reason. It offers a great range, a still relatively modern design, and additional features like a well-designed infotainment system. But it's far from the only option out there -- and in fact, there are some seriously great alternatives, like the BMW iX, for example.

I know what you're thinking -- the BMW iX is way more expensive than the Tesla Model Y. It starts at $87,100, while the Model Y starts at $43,990. This is perhaps not the fairest of comparisons out there, but you might be surprised how well the Model Y does, considering the fact that it's around half the price of the iX. The one you buy will ultimately depend on your priorities, but regardless, it's important to know the similarities -- and the differences.
Design
The first thing you'll notice about these cars is their design, and in that respect, they're pretty different.
