Toyota recalls 760,000 RAV4s and 18,000 Lexus HS250h hybrids over faulty suspension

Toyota-Rav4Toyota is recalling roughly 760,000 RAV4s and 18,000 Lexus HS250h hybrid sedans due to faulty suspension components that could fail and cause drivers to lose control of their vehicles.

The rear suspension arms in the affected cars can rust prematurely, wearing out and eventually breaking from their mounting points. According to the Associated Press, the corrosion problem is caused by nuts that aren’t properly tightened after a wheel alignment. Without a suspension arm to properly orient each of the rear wheels, they have no inclination to travel in a straight line. Consequently, a car experiencing a rear suspension failure could skid or spin out of control.

Toyota does not have a solution for this problem, but it said it would notify owners when a fix is figured out. The company said it will notify owners by mail and, of course, will fix their cars for free. Until then, owners are being told to contact their dealers if they hear any unusual noises in the rears of their cars.

The recall includes RAV4s made in model years 2006 through 2011, as well as 2010 HS250h models. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) opened its own investigation June 4, looking into rear suspension defects in 2006 to 2008 RAV4s, totaling 460,000 vehicles. The NHTSA said that the rear suspension arm “may fail due to corrosion, potentially causing a loss of vehicle control.”

The agency said it had received seven complaints of rusty rear suspension arms on the affected models. One driver reported skidding across four lanes of traffic on an interstate when the rear suspension came apart. Toyota said it knew of nine crashes, and three minor injuries, due to these rear suspension failures.Lexus HS250h overhead front three-quarter view

The rear suspension recall and government investigation are the latest of many quality issues bedeviling Toyota’s compact SUV. In another ongoing investigation, the NHTSA is looking into the potential for power window switches to cause door fires.

Last year, 2007 and 2008 model year RAV4s were recalled for airbags that could go off without warning, which brings us back to 2010 and the infamous “unintended acceleration due to stuck floor mats” extravaganza. RAV4s built for model years 2009 and 2010 were part of the multi million vehicle recall over allegedly sticky gas pedals.

Mercedes-Benz G580 first drive: old-school off-roader goes electric
2025 Mercedes-Benz G580 from three quarter view.

American car buyers mostly know Mercedes-Benz as a luxury brand. But for decades, the automaker has also produced the tough, rugged G-Class (also known as the Geländewagen or G-Wagen), an SUV not afraid to get its leather upholstery muddy. And now, this iconic Mercedes is going electric.

The 2025 Mercedes-Benz G580 with EQ Technology — the final name of the SUV previously known as the EQG — isn’t the first electric off-roader. The Rivian R1S and R1T and GMC Hummer EV have proven that electric powertrains and off-roading are a great combination. But the electric G-Wagen is different because it’s based on an internal-combustion model — and a very traditional one at that.

Honda believes hydrogen semi trucks will make the case for fuel cells
Honda hydrogen fuel-cell semi truck.

Honda remains committed to hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles, but the market for those vehicles remains limited. So Honda is looking at other uses for fuel cells -- including commercial trucks.

To show how that could work, Honda converted a semi truck to fuel-cell power, replacing its diesel engine with three fuel-cell modules. Together, the three modules produce a combined 321 horsepower, and can propel the truck to a top speed of 70 mph. There's enough onboard hydrogen storage capacity for a 400-mile range with a full load, Honda claims.

Mercedes-Benz G580 vs Rivian R2: Is the much cheaper Rivian actually better?
2025 Mercedes-Benz G580 from three quarter view.

Mercedes-Benz has finally taken the wraps off of the new "Mercedes-Benz G580 with EQ Technology." Yeah, it's a mouthful, but it's basically a new electric G-Wagon. It looks a lot like the G-Wagon you know and love, but with an electric powertrain and a battery. It's not the only electric SUV out there, however, and there are some great ones -- like the Rivian R2.

Both the Mercedes G580 and the Rivian R2 have a lot going for them, but they also approach the electric SUV slightly differently. Is one better than the other? I put the two head-to-head to find out.

The approach that the two vehicles take to design is quite different -- and you might like one better than the other.
