VW Jetta GLI Momo Edition debuts at SEMA, complete with roof rack

What is it with Volkswagen customizers and roof racks? Spot a modified late-model VW on the street, and often no matter how impractical the changes are, it’ll still sport a rather un-stylish roof rack. Because even if your car is too low to get over speed bumps, there’s no reason to sacrifice practicality, right?

Debuting at the 2015 SEMA show in Las Vegas, the 2016 Volkswagen Jetta GLI Momo Edition was built by the Italian racing-equipment company to show what a possible collaboration between it and VW could produce. It’s got all of the custom touches one normally sees on a Jetta, including the roof rack.

Momo didn’t take as aggressive an approach as other companies do with their SEMA concepts, sticking to bolt-on parts for what it calls an “OEM-plus” look. But there are still some notable changes that give the Jetta GLI more attitude and show off Momo’s wares.

The company is well known for its wheels, so naturally the Jetta got a set of 19-inch “Revenge”-style rims that preview a design Momo will put on sale next year. There’s also an upgraded suspension system from H&R, and a beefier brake setup that mixes calipers and rotors from Brembo at the front, with hardware from the Volkswagen Golf R at the back.

On the inside, the Jetta gets a Momo GT50 Anniversary steering wheel, a special design made to commemorate Momo’s 50th anniversary. There’s also yellow trim throughout the mostlystock interior. Momo also added a vehicle-information display that fits into the driver’s side air vent. It can show everything from 0-to-60 mph times and speed to turbo boost pressure and throttle position.

The Jetta GLI powertrain remains mostly stock, with the exception of a stainless steel cat-back exhaust system. That doesn’t change the output of the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, which still produces 210 horsepower and 207 pound-feet of torque. The GLI is essentially VW’s sedan counterpart to the GTI hatchback, although it sits in the GTI’s shadow to some extent.

The Momo Edition 2016 Volkswagen Jetta GLI won’t go into production, but it would probably please fans if VW got onboard.

Mercedes-Benz G580 first drive: old-school off-roader goes electric
2025 Mercedes-Benz G580 from three quarter view.

American car buyers mostly know Mercedes-Benz as a luxury brand. But for decades, the automaker has also produced the tough, rugged G-Class (also known as the Geländewagen or G-Wagen), an SUV not afraid to get its leather upholstery muddy. And now, this iconic Mercedes is going electric.

The 2025 Mercedes-Benz G580 with EQ Technology — the final name of the SUV previously known as the EQG — isn’t the first electric off-roader. The Rivian R1S and R1T and GMC Hummer EV have proven that electric powertrains and off-roading are a great combination. But the electric G-Wagen is different because it’s based on an internal-combustion model — and a very traditional one at that.

Honda believes hydrogen semi trucks will make the case for fuel cells
Honda hydrogen fuel-cell semi truck.

Honda remains committed to hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles, but the market for those vehicles remains limited. So Honda is looking at other uses for fuel cells -- including commercial trucks.

To show how that could work, Honda converted a semi truck to fuel-cell power, replacing its diesel engine with three fuel-cell modules. Together, the three modules produce a combined 321 horsepower, and can propel the truck to a top speed of 70 mph. There's enough onboard hydrogen storage capacity for a 400-mile range with a full load, Honda claims.

Mercedes-Benz G580 vs Rivian R2: Is the much cheaper Rivian actually better?
2025 Mercedes-Benz G580 from three quarter view.

Mercedes-Benz has finally taken the wraps off of the new "Mercedes-Benz G580 with EQ Technology." Yeah, it's a mouthful, but it's basically a new electric G-Wagon. It looks a lot like the G-Wagon you know and love, but with an electric powertrain and a battery. It's not the only electric SUV out there, however, and there are some great ones -- like the Rivian R2.

Both the Mercedes G580 and the Rivian R2 have a lot going for them, but they also approach the electric SUV slightly differently. Is one better than the other? I put the two head-to-head to find out.

The approach that the two vehicles take to design is quite different -- and you might like one better than the other.
