Apple and News Corp. delay launch of The Daily

The DailyYou’re going to have wait a little longer to check out Rupert Murdoch’s iPad news venture The Daily. Apple and Murdoch’s News Corp. have delayed the launch of the paper in order to address issues with the subscription model, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The Daily had been scheduled to launch on January 19, next Wednesday, at an event at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. The event was to be hosted by Murdoch and Apple CEO Steve Jobs.

According to the report the delay is a matter of “weeks, not months” and was mutually decided by Apple and News. Corp. Both companies found that Apple’s subscription service needs more time to get right.

Apple has been developing a new service that allows reoccurring “push” subscriptions that are automatically billed to customers’  accounts. Previously, users had to download and pay for new issues one at a time.

It’s important for both Apple and News Corps. to launch with a hassle free service in place. IPad publications haven’t had much success in retaining customers. And some of that has to do with the lack of a functional subscription model.

One thing is for certain, The Daily will launch and will likely launch sooner rather than later. Murdoch has invested heavily into digital-only newspaper, committing $30 million to the project and employing a staff of 100 people across two bureaus in New York and Los Angeles.

Apple could bring the infamous notch over to the iPad Pro in 2022
A 2021 iPad Pro is attached to a keyboard on a desk.

When Apple first introduced the notch with the iPhone X, the industry was moving toward a higher screen-to-body ratio. + The iPhones still have the notch design today, and Apple has also brought the notch to the new MacBook Pro – without bringing FaceID. Now, it seems like the company wants to make it a marketing statement by introducing the notch to its whole suite of products. The next device that's said to arrive sporting a notch is the iPad Pro.

Apple’s Universal Control won’t arrive on Macs, iPads until 2022
The MacBook Pro with the default wallpaper, which hides the notch.

After having dropped the latest releases of its operating systems -- including iOS 15.2, iPad OS 15.2, macOS Monterey 12.1, watchOS 8.3, and tvOS 15.2 -- early Monday morning local time, one highly coveted feature that Apple promoted during its WWDC presentation earlier this year was notably missing. Unfortunately, it appears that Universal Control, a KVM-like feature that allows you to share a mouse and keyboard and work seamlessly across a Mac and iPad, didn't quite make the cut in the latest versions of the company's new iPadOS and macOS operating system releases.

It appears that the release date for Universal Control on the Mac has now been adjusted from winter to "available this spring," according to Apple's information page for macOS Monterey. The company did not give any further details or explanation for the delay, though this could mean that the feature won't arrive until macOS 12.2 drops.

The new iPad Mini may get a 120Hz ProMotion display
Lifestyle image of someone using the iPad Mini.

After years of anticipation, Apple updated its iPad Mini for 2021 several weeks ago. The latest iteration of the smallest iPad now features an 8.3-inch display with slimmer bezels. However, some users noticed a "jelly scrolling" issue, which is a term for when the right side of the screen runs faster than the left side in portrait mode. Apple's response to "jelly scrolling" was that the effect was normal behavior for LCD screens that refresh line by line. The next iPad Mini could solve this issue by gaining an iPad Pro upgrade that would bring the display's refresh rate up to 120Hz.

According to a report from @FronTron, Apple is considering launching an iPad Mini with 120Hz refresh rate. As of now, the latest iPad Mini comes equipped with a 60Hz screen. The upcoming iPad Mini could feature the same display that Apple has been using on the iPad Pro models since 2017.
