Asus Announces High-Res 19-inch LCD

Taiwan’s Asus is bringing high-resolution computing to smaller screen sizes, announcing its new VW198 19-inch display, sporting a 1,680 by 1,050 WSXGA+ resolution. Although Asus also offers that resolution in slightly larger screen sizes (20- and 22-inches, respectively), the company is clearly hoping that cramming that many pixels into a smaller panel will appeal to users who need lots of dots, but don’t have a lot of space for them. Asus says it’s the first 19-inch monitor to offer such high resolution.

The VW198 sports a healthy 3,000:1 contrast ratio, a 5ms response time, 300 cd/m² of brightness, and a 170°horizontal viewing angle. The display offers both D-sub and HDCP-enabled DVI outputs, and is certified for use with Windows Vista. The display also features Asus’s proprietary Splendid Video Intelligence Technology, which automatically detects the use of video applications (like DVD player software, etc.) and optimizes image quality for best results. Five preset modes (standard, night, game, theater, and scenery) also enable users to easily switch between different display characteristics based on their activities. The displays also feature a pair of 1-watt integrated speakers.

The 20- and 22-inch versions of the display (VW202 and VW222, respectively) only offer 2,000:1 contrast ratios, but the 22-inch version of the display (the VW222U/S) offers a 2ms grey-to-grey response time.

Asus did not revealed any information on availability or pricing.

Has the Mac Studio replaced the 27-inch iMac? I sure hope not

Apple has announced two new pro-level products at its Spring event -- or "studio" Macs, in the new nomenclature. The Mac Studio and Studio Display. While impressive in their own right, the announcements corresponded with the removal of the 27-inch iMac from the company's store. Poof -- gone, just like that.

Of course, we were all expecting the 27-inch iMac to eventually transition to Apple Silicon, like the rest of the Mac lineup. But according to the wording in Apple's presentation today, there's only one product left for the company to complete its transition, which was mentioned by name as the Mac Pro. The only mention of the 27-inch iMac in today's presentation was dunking on it by Mac Studio.

Apple is developing a foldable MacBook with a 20-inch screen

Despite delays in the development of its foldable iPhone, a new report says Apple has set its sights on creating a "foldable notebook" with a massive 20-inch display.

The claim comes from fairly reputable Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC) analyst Ross Young, who has been correct about future Apple products a number of times. If accurate, Apple could be looking to introduce "a new product category" of foldable laptops to its lineup.

At CES 2022, Asus launched a number of new professional, business, and mobile displays under its ProArt and ZenScreen brands. The star of the show, however, was the ProArt Display PA169CDV, a portable touchscreen monitor that's designed for creative professionals working on the go.

The new monitors boast a number of features that will appeal to their respective audiences, including a kickstand to prop up the ZenScreen when used on the go, color accuracy and inking support on the ProArt displays, and integrated webcam and speakers for a complete video conferencing solution with the business display.
