Guess what? Those holdover Atom-powered PCs that keep shipping with Windows XP despite the fact Microsoft has been shipping Vista for almost two years? They aren’t confined to the so-called “nettop” market. Averatec has just announced a new version of its slim All-in-One desktop PC sporting a 1.6 GHz Intel Atom processor and boasting an 18.4-inch display. The unit is a follow-up to the existing 22-inch model with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, and Averatec is pitching the system as ideal for everyday tasks like surfing the Web and keeping up on email.
The new unit features the aforementioned 18.4-inch display (no resolution given) and 1.6 GHz Intel Atom processor; the system also comes with 1 GB of RAM, a 160 GB hard drive, and 802.11 WI-Fi networking—and, of course, Windows XP.
Averatec says the system will be available from major retail and online resellers (as well as through Averatec’s online store) at an estimated price of $549.99. The 22-inch version—with the Intel Core 2 Duo and Windows Vista Home Edition—carries a suggested retail price of about $1,149.99.
