Canva’s new AI tools might replace your video editor

Canva — the online design platform used to create logos, presentations, infographics, and more — announced a new suite of AI tools that can do everything from generate new images to automatically edit videos for you.

The toolset touches nearly every part of Canva’s design suite. It starts with Magic Design, which will automatically design a graphic for you based on an uploaded image and selected style. Users are free to edit the design after the fact, and they can automatically translate it with Canva’s new AI-powered translate feature that supports more than 100 languages.

Once you have the initial design, Canva has Magic Edit and Magic Eraser to help you refine it. Magic Eraser speaks for itself — erase parts of the image, with AI taking the rest of the image into account — but Magic Edit is interesting. It can add or replace anything in an image, according to Canva. All you need to do is prompt the AI regarding what you want to add or replace, and it will fill in the missing detail.

Perhaps the most interesting feature is Beat Sync. It can automatically edit your video footage to a song, cycling through different video clips or images without any manual editing. It’s not going to put any video editors out of a job, but it is one of the more interesting applications of AI we’ve seen thus far.

In addition to a single graphic, Magic Design can also generate presentations, similar to PowerPoint’s new AI-powered suite of tools. You can also leverage MagicWrite to generate text for your slides or graphics, similar to how people are using ChatGPT.

The company hasn’t said if its tools are built on an in-house AI or if it’s leveraging an existing model like GPT-4 (the AI model behind tools like ChatGPT Plus).

AI isn’t all Canva is adding to its design tool. The company also announced Brand Hub, which integrates templates, folders, guidelines, and approval workflows for brands. Some “highly requested” features are coming to the tool as well, including drawing tools, layers, gradients, alt text for images, and 953 new fonts.

It’s no surprise to see Canva integrate a suite of AI tools after the monumental rise of ChatGPT and subsequent release of apps like Bing Chat’s DALL-E 2 integration. Adobe, for its part, has been adding AI tools to its suite of software for years. Photoshop has supported AI content fill and background removal for close to a year, and Premiere Pro recently received color match, morph cut, and automatic reframing features — all powered by AI — earlier this year.

OpenAI’s new AI-made videos are blowing people’s minds
An AI image portraying two mammoths that walk through snow, with mountains and a forest in the background.

OpenAI's latest venture into AI might be its most impressive one to date. Dubbed "Sora," this new text-to-video AI model has just opened its doors to a limited number of users who will get to test it. The company launched it by showing several videos made entirely by AI, and the end results are shockingly realistic.

OpenAI introduces Sora by saying that it can create realistic scenes based on text prompts, and the videos shared on its website serve to prove it. The prompts are descriptive, but short; I've personally used longer prompts just interacting with ChatGPT. For instance, to generate the video of wooly mammoths pictured above, Sora required a 67-word prompt that described the animals, the surroundings, and the camera placement.

AMD might have a new graphics card next month, too
AMD RX 7600 on a pink background.

We weren't expecting to hear much about AMD's graphics cards in January, but a new rumor suggests we'll see a new GPU in just a few weeks. AMD is prepping the RX 7600 XT, according to Benchlife's sources (via VideoCardz). It's apparently an updated version of AMD's budget-focused RX 7600, sporting more VRAM and perhaps a better die.

To understand the rumored card, we have to look at the RX 7600 we already have. It's an 8GB graphics card based on the Navi 33 GPU. The card already maxes out the capabilities of the GPU with 32 Compute Units (CUs), equaling 2,048 cores. If AMD is preparing an RX 7600 XT, there are two possibilities. Either it will use the same maxed-out Navi 33 GPU or a stripped-down version of the Navi 32 GPU we see in cards like the RX 7800 XT and RX 7700 XT. Hopefully, the latter is true. Although the RX 7600 is a solid 1080p graphics card, it remains about 30% slower than the next step up in AMD's lineup.

This new AI animation tool is blowing people’s minds
Image being animated with RunwayML motion brush

More AI tools are popping up to advance features of the popular generators that are already available, and the latest one is blowing people's minds.

One AI research company, Runway, has recently introduced the second generation of its Motion Brush tool, which helps animate aspects of AI-generated images, such as those created in Midjourney. The simple brush tool to animate images feels like magic -- which is always true when AI is done right. The video below, as posted by AI enthusiast, Rory Flynn, shows the new tool in action.
