Dell Pushes Penryn CPUs into Notebooks

Dell is working hard to make it easy for notebook computer users to set their hands on Intel’s latest “Penryn” CPUs, adding 2.5 and 2.6 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T9300 and T9500 processors as options to a wide range of its notebook computers, including the Precision M2300, M4300, and M6300 workstation systems, as well as its mainstream Latitude D630 and D830 lines.

Generally speaking, the T9300 and T9500 processors deliver minor but measurable performance gains over their predecessors, aided by 6 MB of L2 cache on each chip. However, the real benefit for notebook users is in the area of reduced power consumption and heat output, helping batteries last longer and making the notebooks more comfortable to use. Adding a T9300 to a notebook typically adds about $250 to its price tag; adding a T9500 typically boosts its cost by over $450.

Dell’s Penyrn-based offerings now cover a wide range of notebook styles, from systems designed for maximum portability, to systems designed as full-on desktop replacements. Nonetheless, the company still has corners of its notebook line that don’t offer Penryn options, including members of its much-touted XPS notebook line.
