Dell updates XPS 13 with 1080p display

Dell’s XPS 13 debuted at last year’s CES and was one of the better premium ultrabooks on the market. However, its display was its one serious flaw. The XPS 13’s resolution of 1366 x 768 was quickly surpassed by a variety of competitors like the HP Spectre and ASUS Zenbook.

The display will be rectified later this month with a minor refresh of the XPS 13 that includes optional 1080p. The upgraded screen is an IPS panel and will provide both better viewing angles and a higher maximum brightness than the standard 1366 x 768 display.

No other major changes have been announced as part of the refresh. Processor options include Intel Core i5 and i7 processors with Intel HD 4000 integrated graphics. A 128GB solid-state drive is standard and can be upgraded to a 256GB model. One option that’s still missing is touch, but Dell offers the convertible XPS 12, which is similarly priced.

Pricing for the upgraded display is not yet announced. We expect it to fall between $150 and $200 on top of the starting price. Consumers will be able to grab the display upgrade in late January.

Luckily, you can get a pretty substantial discount on the XPS 14 directly from Dell as part of the early Memorial Day sale, with a price tag of $1,749 rather than the usual $2,259 it goes for. That's a whopping $510 discount, so if you want a powerful little laptop, this is the perfect opportunity to grab one.

Why you should buy the Dell XPS 14
This little Dell XPS 14 comes with a 14.5-inch screen running an FHD+ resolution and a peak brightness of 500 nits, making it the perfect companion for keeping mobile and taking it with you wherever you go. That's certainly helped by the 3.7-pound weight and the 0.71-inch thickness that makes it both lightweight and thin enough to fit in a bag or backpack, and it's well-built enough that you shouldn't have to worry about carrying it around. It's worth mentioning that you can upgrade the screen to a gorgeous 3.2K OLED screen that's also touche-enabled for an extra $300, although it does bump up the weight a bit to 3.8 pounds.

While Dell makes some of the best laptops on the market, especially under the Alienware brand, it also has some of the best desktops as well. Interestingly, while the XPS lineup of laptops is known as being Dell's answer to the MacBook, Dell also has XPS desktops that you can grab, and they're actually pretty good. In fact, this Dell XPS desktop configuration is being discounted directly by Dell, bringing the price down to $1,100 from its usual $1,550, which is a very substantial $450 discount.

Why you should buy the Dell XPS Desktop
While the Dell XPS Desktop doesn't quite look like a gaming PC, it does come with an RTX 4060 Ti, which, admittedly, is an entry-level gaming GPU, and that's a good option for 1080p gaming. It will be able to hit around 100 frames at that resolution, although there may be some slight compromises with graphical settings here and there. Even so, that's still an excellent inclusion for the price you're getting, and if you already have a 1080p monitor, you won't have to change, which is probably the biggest positive.

Dell is flipping the XPS 13 on its head. In fact, it's changing up its entire lineup of laptops with the addition of the new Snapdragon X Elite chip, which coincides with Microsoft's push into the era of AI PCs.

Although we have five new laptops here, the XPS 13 definitely takes center stage. The XPS 13 is still one of the best laptops you can buy, depite the Plus redesign stirring up some controversy in the community (read our XPS 13 Plus review for more on that). This new model sports the Plus design with an edge-to-edge keyboard and capacitive touch buttons, along with an invisible haptic touchpad.
