Dell’s gold XPS 13 proves Windows laptops can be fashion accessories, too

Most geeks care about how their PC works, but what about how it looks? That’s also important, especially for business professionals, creatives, and people who dress nicer than you do.

Those so concerned have usually bought Apple laptops, as the company’s clean designs are at once beautiful and professional. A MacBook never really looks out of place. Windows laptops? They don’t stand a chance. Most are made of boring plastic, and even nicer models tend to have at least one objectionable trait — often, a massive, prominent logo.

Now, finally, Dell has an answer for those who love Windows 10, and want to look good using it. The new gold XPS 13.

We reviewed the Dell XPS 13 not once, but twice, in 2015 — first the original release at the beginning of the year, and later the Skylake refresh, which improved performance and added USB Type-C. It’s our favorite 13-inch notebook, and even in it’s original silver finish, it was quite fetching. But the new gold release puts it over the top.

In fact, the gold may make it even more attractive than Apple’s MacBook in the same color. The main reason for this is the interior. Unlike many rivals, Dell does not use an all-metal uni-body chassis. Instead, it uses metal on the exterior, but pairs that with a matte black soft-touch interior. It contrasts wonderfully with the new gold chassis.

But you’ll have to pay for the privilege of owning a beautiful Windows ultrabook. The gold model is only available in a specific, high-end configuration with a 3,200 x 1,800 touchscreen, Intel Core i7 dual-core processor, and 256GB PCIe solid state drive. The price is a cool $1,650.

We’re going to examine the system more closely in an update of the XPS 13’s review, but our early impressions are favorable — as they should be, given the price. For most people, this particular incarnation is a luxury. It’s double the price of the basic, $800 XPS 13, after all. But if you can afford it, you’ll be rewarded with a laptop that looks worth every cent you spent.

Someone needs to give Dell a lesson in marketing, because it hid the most impressive part of the new XPS 13. The upcoming laptop is the first to feature a Tandem OLED display, as Dell confirmed to The Verge. 

Tandem OLED is all the rage right now, with Apple introducing the display tech first with the iPad Pro M4. The concept behind Tandem OLED is simple. In order to increase the historically low brightness of OLED, you stack multiple OLED panels on top of each other. We haven't heard of any other shipping device using this display tech, outside of the upcoming XPS 13.

For a long time, the Dell XPS 13 constituted Dell's small laptop response to the MacBook Air 13, but there's a new kid in town. Why you should buy the Dell XPS 14
This little Dell XPS 14 comes with a 14.5-inch screen running an FHD+ resolution and a peak brightness of 500 nits, making it the perfect companion for keeping mobile and taking it with you wherever you go. That's certainly helped by the 3.7-pound weight and the 0.71-inch thickness that makes it both lightweight and thin enough to fit in a bag or backpack, and it's well-built enough that you shouldn't have to worry about carrying it around. It's worth mentioning that you can upgrade the screen to a gorgeous 3.2K OLED screen that's also touche-enabled for an extra $300, although it does bump up the weight a bit to 3.8 pounds.

While Dell makes some of the best laptops on the market, especially under the Alienware brand, it also has some of the best desktops as well. Interestingly, while the XPS lineup of laptops is known as being Dell's answer to the MacBook, Dell also has XPS desktops that you can grab, and they're actually pretty good. In fact, this Dell XPS desktop configuration is being discounted directly by Dell, bringing the price down to $1,100 from its usual $1,550, which is a very substantial $450 discount.

Why you should buy the Dell XPS Desktop
While the Dell XPS Desktop doesn't quite look like a gaming PC, it does come with an RTX 4060 Ti, which, admittedly, is an entry-level gaming GPU, and that's a good option for 1080p gaming. It will be able to hit around 100 frames at that resolution, although there may be some slight compromises with graphical settings here and there. Even so, that's still an excellent inclusion for the price you're getting, and if you already have a 1080p monitor, you won't have to change, which is probably the biggest positive.
