Firefox 2.0 to Launch Today

If everything goes according to plan, Mozilla should officially release Firefox 2.0 today, putting the popular alternative browser head-to-head with Microsoft’s just-released Internet Explorer 7. Although the release was posted to Mozilla’s FTP servers yesterday, the release should be available shortly from the Firefox home page. Versions are available for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux.

Mozilla 2.0 features new anti-phishing technologies designed to protect users frmo online identity theft, as well as an inline spell checker, and more flexible ways to manage RSS and XML feeds. The release also improves tabbed browsing (offering close boxes for every tab, for instance) and enables users to resume complete browsing sessions, including multiple windows and tabs, form data, in-progress downloads. A new Add-ons Manager also provides a single location for users to manage Firefox themes and extensions.

Mozilla is releasing its latest version of the Firefox browser as of Tuesday with a focus on privacy, accessibility, and customization, according to the brand.

The new release will include a number of features, but one notable highlight is the introduction of a shortcut button for Private Browsing mode that you can pin to your desktop. This is a feature intended for easy access to the feature that is typically found within the triple bar icon at the upper right corner of the browser or when right-clicking the Firefox icon on the Windows taskbar with a mouse or trackpad. While it might not be extremely tedious, this feature takes out some extra steps for those who wish to take advantage.
