A significant update for the desktop version of Google Maps should roll out “over the coming weeks,” if an official Google blog post is any indication.

When the new update hits, you’ll be able to see your search results directly on the map itself, along with other suggested places. Street View previews of the places you’re looking up will also be made available, as well as real time traffic data. 3D images will also be easier to access when using the desktop version of Google Maps, via an image carousel at the bottom of the screen. This version of Google Maps was first previewed at last year’s developer-focused Google I/O conference, which took place in May.

Though the new version of Google Maps can currently be accessed by hitting up www.google.com/maps/preview, it has been available as an option. Once the update rolls out, the new Maps will be what you’ll be using by default.

Brian McClendon, VP of Google Maps, had this to say about the Google Maps for desktop computers update:

“With any product redesign, there may be bumps along the road. We’re hoping that you’re as excited as we are to navigate uncharted territory in pursuit of the perfect map. As always, we want to hear what you think as we work to improve the new Maps over time.”

You can provide Google with your Maps feedback by clicking here and following the on-screen instructions.

Check out a video preview of the new Google Maps below.

Google’s Nest Wifi Pro leaks weeks ahead of Pixel event
Google Nest Wifi sits on a black stand.

The Google Nest Wifi Pro is expected to arrive soon, and a recent leak suggests that the price has gone up compared to earlier models.

The info comes from B&H Photo, which has dropped some details of the product ahead of Google's Pixel event, scheduled for October 6. A search for "Google Nest Wifi Pro 6E" returned several results. Those B&H listings have now been removed, but we managed to capture screenshots before they disappeared. The price is shown as $199, $30 more than the 2019 Nest Wifi's retail price of $169 and $80 more than the current $119 sale price.

A dangerous new jailbreak for AI chatbots was just discovered
the side of a Microsoft building

Microsoft has released more details about a troubling new generative AI jailbreak technique it has discovered, called "Skeleton Key." Using this prompt injection method, malicious users can effectively bypass a chatbot's safety guardrails, the security features that keeps ChatGPT from going full Taye.

Skeleton Key is an example of a prompt injection or prompt engineering attack. It's a multi-turn strategy designed to essentially convince an AI model to ignore its ingrained safety guardrails, "[causing] the system to violate its operators’ policies, make decisions unduly influenced by a user, or execute malicious instructions," Mark Russinovich, CTO of Microsoft Azure, wrote in the announcement.
