Honor charms with the first MagicBook laptops sold globally

Andy Boxall/DigitalTrends

Huawei has sold MateBook X laptops globally for years. Now, for 2020, Huawei-owned brand Honor is attempting to break out of China and into the hands of owners worldwide. The Honor MagicBook 14 and MagicBook 15 are the first to be sold internationally, and like the brand’s phones, are aimed at young people on a budget.

The Honor laptops look identical apart from size and weight. A choice of mystic silver and space grey are provided, while the edge of the display lid, and the Honor logo, have a laser-etched blue tint that’s subtle yet classy.

The aluminum chassis is upmarket, and the thin bezels around the screen ensure the MagicBook looks modern and expensive. The MagicBook laptops feel solid, the keyboard has just the right amount of travel, and both laptops are light enough to feel portable.

Each laptop is powered by an AMD Ryzen 5 3500U processor with Radeon Vega 8 integrated graphics. That comes with 8GB of RAM and the option of either a 256GB or 512GB SSD. Port selection includes USB Type-C, a pair of USB Type-A, HDMI, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. Like Huawei’s MateBook laptops, each MagicBook has a fingerprint sensor in the power button and a pop-up webcam set between the F6 and F7 keys. Windows 10 is the default OS, of course.

It’s screen size that separates the two. The 14-inch MagicBook has a Full HD, 16:9 screen with a 84% screen-to-body ratio. Its set inside a 15.9mm thick chassis that weighs 1.38kg. The 15-inch model is a little beefier at 1.53kg and 16.9mm thick, but the 15.6-inch screen has a higher 87% screen-to-body ratio. The aspect ratio and resolution remain the same.

The battery in each is charged with an included 65W brick, providing about 10 hours use on a single charge.

Price and availability

Honor hasn’t confirmed price or availability yet. These details will follow its February 24 launch event.

Expect the Honor MagicBook laptops to be sold through Honor’s own online store, and potentially through other retailers, with prices somewhere around the $500 to $600 mark, based on the cost of the laptops in China. We’ll update here when we have final details.

Honor Magic V could be a Galaxy Z Fold 3 rival with flagship cameras
Chinese actress Song Yi with the Honor Magic 3.

Honor has been teasing the Magic V as the company's first foldable for a while. The company's been a little reticent to share details, but according to the leaks, it is shaping up to be an all-out flagship device. We all know what that means -- a powerful high-end chipset with copious amounts of RAM, flagship cameras, and a high-res display with an equally high refresh rate. Earlier reports said it would come in three color variants – orange, white, and black -- and a new report from MySmartPrice added a bit more detail to it.

As per the report, the orange variant of the Honor Magic V will feature a faux leather finish, which was also shown in a promo image. The white variant has a striped pattern on it. The cover display seems slim, like the Galaxy Z Fold 3, and it sports a centered hole-punch cutout for the selfie camera. Renders were also included, showing off the foldable's colors and cover screen.

Honor has been teasing the impending launch of its first full-fledged foldable phone for the past few weeks now. The Honor Magic V first appeared in an official teaser video on Honor's Twitter account in December. Earlier this week, the company confirmed a January 10 launch date for the phone, but Honor has tried hard to ensure we did not see a full image of the phone before launch.

Fortunately for us, Honor's plan to keep the Honor Magic V's chic looks under wraps fell flat on its face after the Chinese edition of Esquire magazine went ahead and posted an image of the Honor Magic V on its Weibo account. The image shows the Honor Magic V in the palm of Chinese actress Song Yi.

After freeing itself from Huawei's shackles, things seem to be looking great for Honor. The company launched several promising smartphones in 2021, including the Honor 60 series, the Honor 50 series, and the Honor Magic 3 lineup -- and seems to have much bigger plans for 2022. These plans also include their first-ever foldable smartphone - the Honor Magic V - which has finally received its official launch date.

In late December 2021, the company teased the Honor Magic V for the first time with a slick-looking video (embedded below) on its social media accounts. Today, Honor Global tweeted out a message that confirms that their first-ever foldable smartphone will be formally unveiled on January 10. The event, unsurprisingly, will be held in China and will be livestreamed across the globe starting at 6:30 am ET.
