Is Firefox Cooling Off?

A new white paper from Janco Associates, a firm which tracks browsing data collected mainly from commercial sites with a focus on business-to-business activity, suggests that browser upstart Firefox’s momentum in popularity recently is slowing.

The data collected from June, according to a Janco press release, suggests that while Firefox is maintaining its position at second in the browser wars, it has lost momentum. Netscape has fared even worse, with their recent release of version 8 of their software not registering much in users’ viewscreens as the company dropped from fourth to fifth place.

Here are the top five browser market share rankings from Janco:

Internet Explorer: 85.07%
Firefox: 8.83%
Mozilla: 3.31%
AOL: 0.81%
Netscape: 0.75%

“The positive glow on Firefox was dulled in April with the identification of some security gaps in Firefox,â€ said CEO of Janco Associates Inc., M. Victor Janulaitis. â€œWhile still maintaining its No. 2 position, Firefox seems to have lost its momentum. Netscape’s release of version 8 has become a non-event. According to our data, Netscape continues to lose market share.”
